All Girls. All Strength. All Survivors. đź’—

We’re coming together to support a single mom of four girls who recently transitioned from a DV shelter into their own safe apartment. Starting over isn’t easy, especially during the holidays, and we’d love to surround them with a little extra care and cheer.

Our very own Amelia knows this mom personally from her time in the shelter and will be hand-delivering all donations. 🤍
New or gently used items are welcome.

Sizes:
• 3-yr-old twins: 4/5T
• 4-yr-old: 5/6T
• 12-yr-old: Junior M/L
• Mom: XS/S

Needs: clothing, shoes, socks, pajamas, sweats
Wants: art supplies, baking items, family games
Helpful extras: flat iron, blow dryer, electric blanket

If you’re able to help in any way, please comment or DM. Even one item makes a difference. Thank you for helping us remind this family they are not alone this season. ✨

Many people think the hard part ends once a DV survivor gets housing.
But here’s what the last 10 days have looked like for Amelia while trying to complete required steps with HRA:

• 4+ in-person trips to HRA offices (more than one borough)
• Re-submitting the same documents multiple times
• Uploading forms online with no guidance
• Different answers from every worker she spoke to

One HRA worker said: “The shelter should have handled this.”
But the shelter never did.
Another said: “We can’t accept this form from a client directly.”
No alternative. No solution. Just another closed door.

Amelia isn’t refusing to follow the process — she’s doing everything asked of her, alone, with no caseworker or housing specialist to guide her.

This isn’t “support.”
This is system-induced exhaustion for someone already overcoming trauma.

If NYC expects survivors to rebuild, the systems meant to help cannot send them in circles until they break down.

Next post will name the agencies that promised help over the years… and didn’t.
Not to attack — but because transparency is the first step to change.

Housing Support Update — What Still Isn’t Right

Thank you for all the love on Amelia’s recent wins — now it’s time for an update that needs its own space. 💬

While Amelia is settling into her new apartment and creating stability step by step, we must also talk about the support she should have received but never did.

Since move-in, there has still been no response from the broker/landlord regarding the concerns and unanswered questions that were raised. The only message sent was to ask if Amelia completed the “security voucher/broker fee packet.”

For most DV survivors, this packet is completed with the support of shelter staff or a housing specialist. Or rather the shelter gets funding for anyway.
Amelia had neither.

She received no proper discharge, no aftercare plan, and no guidance for next steps — which is a basic standard of care for survivors transitioning out of shelter. Instead, she has been navigating everything alone, relying only on a retired volunteer DV advocate — not one the system that is funded to provide this support.

In addition, the shelter organization’s administration has not responded to the email sent on October 15th.
No check-in.
No follow-up.
No accountability.

The truth is: the support wasn’t “cut off” — it was never meaningfully provided in the first place.

And yet… Amelia is doing what so many survivors are forced to do: figure it out on her own, while also trying to heal and rebuild her life.

🌱 What is happening:
We are keeping a thorough paper trail — dates, emails, calls, documents — because accountability matters, especially when a survivor falls through the cracks of the very system designed to help.

This isn’t about anger. It’s about awareness, honesty, and responsibility.
If the goal of DV services is long-term safety and stability, then survivors cannot be abandoned the moment they exit a shelter door.

We will be tagging the organization when the time is right, because silence and lack of follow-through should not be brushed under the rug. Survivors deserve better than being left to navigate a life-altering transition alone.

Next update soon — and it will cover the HRA maze, the “referrals with no follow-through,” and how Amelia has spent the last 10 days running in circles just trying to get basic guidance.

Stay with us. The truth matters. đź’›

🌟 We Have Not Forgotten About You All! 🌟

It’s been 10 days since our last update — and WOW… has Amelia (and a small but mighty team of volunteers) been busy. Before we get into the heavy updates, we want to start with the wins and the positive vibes first. 💛

About a week ago, Amelia texted her volunteer DV advocate with a moment that truly hit differently…

She had just taken a warm, relaxing bath… and then laid down in her very own bed.

Not a cot.
Not a twin in a shelter.
Not an air mattress.
Not in a car she no longer has.
Not on a subway or a public bus.

Her own bed. In her own apartment. Safe.

For the first time in a very long time, she laid there in the quiet — staring at the ceiling — with no fear of being woken up and facing her abuser… no staff doing bed checks… no chaos… just peace.

✨ A safe night’s sleep in her own space.
Sometimes, that alone is a victory worth celebrating.

And here’s another heart-warming update — Amelia has met and become friendly with a few of her neighbors. She’s even been sharing some of the donated items she doesn’t need or had duplicates of, because community grows when we give, not just receive. 🫶

To everyone who has donated, volunteered, checked in, or kept her in your prayers — thank you. Amelia has gained more than belongings during this chapter… she’s gained a village, new friendships, and a level of support she never expected. 💛

Stay tuned — Post #2 will cover the housing and shelter support update (or lack thereof). It deserves its own space.

‼️ DID YOU KNOW? – IMPORTANT FOR ALL DV SURVIVORS ‼️

When you leave a NYC or NYS Domestic Violence Shelter, your discharge plan is REQUIRED (by contract and law) to include REAL support—not “good luck, bye.”

Here’s what MUST be included in your Discharge / Aftercare Plan:

✅ Safe, confirmed housing plan (not just “figure it out”)
âś… Referrals for permanent or transitional housing programs (including DV priority housing, Section 8, NYCHA, HAVI, etc.)
âś… Furniture & household goods assistance referrals
âś… Basic necessities / start-up supplies (bed, linens, kitchen items, cleaning products, etc.)
âś… Benefit assistance (HRA, SNAP, Cash Assistance, SSI/SSD, etc.)
âś… Employment or income support services (job programs OR disability help)
âś… Mental health & trauma counseling referrals
âś… Medical care referrals & help scheduling follow-up
âś… Safety planning for after discharge (this is MANDATORY)
âś… Legal referrals (custody, child support, divorce, orders of protection, immigration, etc.)
âś… Transportation assistance to essential appointments
âś… Connection to community resources / support groups
âś… At least one follow-up contact after discharge
âś… Ongoing advocacy if issues arise (yes, they must help even AFTER you leave!)

👉 These are NOT “extras.”
👉 These are CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS for NYC & NYS DV programs.
Shelters RECEIVE FUNDING to provide them.

If you (or someone you know) left shelter without these supports…
🚨 That is NOT OKAY.
🚨 That is a contract violation.
🚨 You have the RIGHT to speak up or request help—even after discharge.

Unheard No More is here to support survivors who were ignored, failed, or pushed out without proper assistance. đź’ś

You are not ungrateful.
You are not asking for too much.
You are asking for what was PROMISED.

Together, we hold them accountable. đź’Ş

❓ DID YOU KNOW…

If you enter a Domestic Violence shelter in NYC, the shelter is LEGALLY REQUIRED and FUNDED to provide MUCH more than just a bed?

Under NYC HRA contracts and NYS OCFS Regulations (18 NYCRR §452.12 & §452.9), every DV survivor in shelter is entitled to:

✅ A Case Manager — with regular meetings
✅ A written service plan (and updates, not “set and forget”)
âś… Housing search assistance and help with vouchers/applications
âś… Referrals for furniture, household items, and start-up essentials
âś… Help applying for benefits (SNAP, disability, cash assistance, etc.)
âś… Transportation support to medical and legal appointments
âś… Legal advocacy or referrals (custody, OPs, court accompaniment)
âś… Safety planning before AND after discharge
âś… Weekly support groups (this is required by law)
âś… Counseling / emotional support
âś… Reasonable medical & ADA accommodations (including ESA support)
âś… A written discharge/transition plan with documented referrals
âś… AFTERCARE or follow-up support once housed

đź’ˇ These are NOT extras.
💡 These are NOT “optional services.”
âś… Shelters are FUNDED to provide them.
âś… These services are MANDATED by law and contract.

If you were in shelter and did NOT receive these services—you were not “asking for too much.”
You were denied what you were legally entitled to.

You are not alone.
We see you.
We believe you.
And we are fighting for change.

🛑 ADVOCACY UPDATE – STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS

We want to keep everyone informed as we continue standing with Amelia during this housing transition.

As of today:
âś… We emailed the broker/landlord on Sunday requesting clarity and next steps.
❌ We have received no response.

✅ The shelter organization’s administrator dropped off an air mattress and a few items last night.
❌ Since then, there has been no further communication or support.

This silence is unacceptable — especially when a survivor is caught in the middle, simply trying to move into the unit she was already approved for.

We will continue to follow up and advocate until there is accountability, clear communication, and action. Survivors deserve more than being left in limbo. They deserve dignity, timely responses, and safe housing without barriers or delays.

đź’› Most importantly: We are deeply grateful for this community.
Knowing that so many of you have her back means Amelia is not alone — and that support matters more than you know.

We will not stay silent.
We will keep pushing for answers.
