‼️WE NEED YOUR HELP TO PROTECT PREGNANT NEW YORKERS! Can you call every day this week to get this bill done?
Call on Assembly Speaker and Senate Majority Leader TODAY to prioritize the Maternal Health, Dignity and Consent Act (A860A/S845A) this session. Swipe for a call template!
All pregnant people deserve to feel safe seeking care. However, across NYS, healthcare providers are drug testing and screening pregnant people without their consent–and for no medical reason. This practice deters people from seeking vital prenatal care, violates their trust and dignity, and worsens maternal and infant health outcomes – especially for Black pregnant people and mothers.
The Maternal Health, Dignity and Consent Act would change that. By affirming pregnant and postpartum patients’ right to informed consent before drug testing, it would build trust between patients and providers; and align practices statewide with NYS Department of Health guidelines, leading medical societies’ clinical standards, and what many large institutions are already implementing.
This week, the New York State Human Rights Division ruled that nonconsensual drug testing of pregnant people by medical professionals constitutes s*x and pregnancy discrimination. The time to act is now. We must pass this bill to guarantee that every pregnant New Yorker — regardless of zip code — has the right to informed consent before being drug tested: to know what is being done to the body, to understand the medical reasoning, and to be asked before it happens.
