The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus is one of the oldest and possibly the most well-known chorus in the LGBTQ choral movement. NYCGMC’s commitment to equality for LGBTQ citizens is matched by their commitment to fabulous singing, and their musicianship and professionalism has connected with audiences in all five boroughs as well as across the globe. Able to perform in a wide range of vocal styles, from classical to pop, jazz, gospel and Broadway, NYCGMC has worked with acclaimed talents in every genre: Marilyn Horne, Roberta Peters, Barbara Cook, Elaine Stritch, Stephen Sondheim, Kelli O’Hara, Carolee Carmello, Victoria Clark, Martha Wash, and Sia—to name just a few.

25 years ago, New York City changed forever.

On September 12, 2001, members of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus gathered with fellow New Yorkers at a vigil in Union Square. Together with the crowd, they sang “Imagine,” then continued to St. Vincent’s Hospital and the West Side Highway as the city waited, grieved, and tried to understand what had happened.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, those who responded in the days and months that followed, and the New Yorkers who found ways to hold one another through an unimaginable time.

We’re honored that, in one small moment, our chorus was there to lend its voice.

Tonight, we walk into our first rehearsal of a brand new season. New music and a whole lot of familiar (and some new ones! Welcome new members!) faces we’ve missed.

Some artists give us songs. Dolly Parton gave us permission to be a little more ourselves.

For generations of LGBTQ+ people, she was more than an icon. She stood with our community, spoke up for us, and reminded us that there was room in this world to be exactly who we are.

In Dolly’s memory, we share our performance of “Wildflowers,” a song about having the courage to leave the familiar behind, find where you belong, and grow into who you were always meant to be.

Thank you, Dolly, for seeing us, loving us, and giving us so much to sing.

May we all keep growing wild and free. 🌸🤍
