Performed on our concert “Singing Truth to Power: Medieval Protest Music”.

This concert was created to challenge and contextualize the power structures of medieval Europe, to invite us all to understand our current problems as the latest expression of centuries-long conflicts, to recognize the relevant ideals of social justice in these medieval texts, and to provide an emotional space to constructively reckon with our own relationships to power.

Un concierto con miembros de Akemie y Ars Poetica que ilumina el mundo de Diego Ortiz.

Este concierto familiar en el Instituto Cervantes destaca la música de Diego Ortiz (c. 1510–1576), uno de los compositores españoles más influyentes del siglo XVI, en su relación con las historias de Don Quijote. Diseñado para despertar la curiosidad y el asombro, este concierto invita tanto a niños como a adultos a descubrir las texturas, los ritmos y los colores de la música española antigua.

This Family Concert at the Instituto Cervantes highlights the music of Diego Ortiz (c. 1510–1576), one of the most influential Spanish composers of the 16th century, as it relates to the stories of Don Quixote. We are so excited to have the amazing .soprano as our Eleanor for this project!

“It is such an honor to bring Eleanor to life. As we dig into the score and Eleanor’s story, I am finding so much joy in seeing Eleanor’s strength grow, both in her security in her identity and in the courage to stand up for herself. I am enjoying the challenge of seeing how my trans experience, though very different from Eleanor’s, informs my portrayal and interpretation of her story.”

Elisse finds delight in presenting opera, choral compositions, and all that resonates in between. An ardent advocate for the collaborative essence of musical creation, Elisse places immense value on versatility and the inherent instrumental qualities of the human voice.

Elisse’s artistic collaborations extend to prestigious groups like The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Seraphic Fire, Apollo’s Fire, Opera Lafayette, The Clarion Choir, Ensemble Altera, Voices of Ascension, Teatro Nuovo, Artefact Ensemble, and The Benedict XVI Choir. A crowning achievement in Elisse’s journey was securing first place at the Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition hosted by the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall.

Join us April 24 & 25 for the premiere of Niccolo Seligmann’s brand new chamber opera, ELEANOR, about the historical figure Eleanor Rykener, who was arrested in 1394 while presenting as a woman. While it is impossible to fully understand Rykener’s life and experience from one court document, Seligmann uses this starting-off point to explore themes of acceptance, identity, and gender in medieval England, incorporating texts by contemporaries Christine de Pisan (1364 – c. 1430), Eustache Deschamps (1346-1406), and Kalonymus ben Kalonymus (1286 – c. 1328).

Composer, librettist and Alkemie core member (they/them) is currently the most widely-heard medieval fiddler in the world, featured in soundtracks from Netflix’s The Witcher, Firaxis Games’ Civilization VI, Obsidian Entertainment’s Pentiment, and many more big-budget and indie games, film, and streaming series. Niccolo’s opera & live theatre music includes Julie Monster: A Q***r Baroque Opera, An Iliad, Minerva: Times Change, and a full-length electronic dance remix of Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet. They perform diverse genres nationally with early & traditional music ensembles Alkemie, The Broken Consort, Concordian Dawn, Eya, Hesperus, Washington Bach Consort, and Wherligig. When not touring with their ensembles or recording soundtracks, Niccolo can be found gleefully recording harsh noise, lo-fi dance music, glitchcore, and drone metal in their home studio in the forests of central Maryland.
