The president has abandoned the Constitution, defying the laws of Congress, ignoring court rulings, dismantling oversight, and misusing federal power to entrench itself, enrich loyalists, and punish opponents.

Congress and the federal courts have proven unable or unwilling to stop it.

The most powerful institutions not yet under authoritarian control are state and local governments. State and local officials take an oath to support the Constitution. That duty does not disappear when the federal government abandons constitutional rule.

Democratism is working to give state and local governments the tools they need to protect their residents, confront federal lawlessness, and restore constitutional governance.

Our Restore the Constitution Act is model legislation that any state or locality can pass immediately to use their powers effectively and strategically.

Tomorrow is Election Day, and once again the Electoral College threatens to defeat the will of the people. It’s time for a change.

If the candidate who loses the popular vote becomes president, it won’t be a rare occurrence. It’s happened five times, including twice in the last 25 years.

The best-regarded forecasts suggest it may be about to happen again—that there is between a 1 in 3 and a 1 in 6 chance that Trump will win the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote (and a less than 1 in 100 chance of that happening to Harris). That’s not democracy, and we shouldn’t stand for it.

Democratism has a solution: the Democracy Decree. It starts with local advocacy in local and state legislatures and leads to a vote of the American people to end the Electoral College—and also create fair representation in Congress.

Democracy demands that the candidate who wins the popular vote win the election. But this is not how it works in the United States of America. The Electoral College allows the loser of the popular vote to become president, and doesn't even give an equal chance to both candidates to win without winning the popular vote. It gives a powerful, unfair advantage to one candidate over the other.

79% of Americans think our democracy is broken or under threat. The popular vote and proportional representation would restore faith in democracy. You can learn about how these reforms would help in our new blog post

Recent polling has found that American faith in democracy is worryingly low. Reforming our voting systems will help all people feel like their vote matters.
