Letter of Appreciation and Affirmation of the Right to Self-Determination and Independence
To Tim Ballard
At a time when the suffering of civilians is too often met with insufficient international attention, principled and courageous voices remain essential in upholding truth and human dignity.
We, members of the local communities of Al-Suwayda Governorate, including Druze and Christian residents, wish to express our sincere appreciation for your humanitarian engagement and for your efforts in drawing attention to the situation of civilians and the challenges they have endured.
Al-Suwayda has experienced a series of deeply concerning developments affecting civilian populations, including reports of serious violations that, under international legal standards, warrant independent investigation and due accountability. These developments have raised profound concerns regarding the safety, dignity, and future of the people of the region.
In this context, we respectfully reaffirm that the people of Jabal Bashan (Al-Suwayda) are entitled to the right to self-determination, as recognized under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations. This right encompasses the ability of peoples to freely determine their political status and to pursue their economic, social, and cultural development.
Furthermore, we affirm that this right includes, where freely determined by the will of the people through peaceful and legitimate means, the option of full independence, in accordance with the principles of international law and self-determination.
For many in the region, the discussion surrounding self-determination has become closely linked to fundamental questions of safety, protection, and the preservation of community identity. It is therefore viewed not merely as a political consideration, but as a matter connected to long-term stability and human security.
We emphasize that our aspirations are grounded in peaceful and lawful principles, and we call for a framework that ensures:
• The effective protection of civilians
• The cessation of all violations of human rights
• The empowerment of local communities to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their future
• Respect for the will of the people through peaceful and internationally recognized processes
We believe that the engagement of responsible international actors and advocates can play an important role in encouraging constructive dialogue, supporting accountability mechanisms, and promoting conditions conducive to a just and lasting peace.
In closing, we extend our appreciation for your attention to humanitarian concerns and reaffirm that the promotion of human dignity, justice, and the rule of law remains essential to any sustainable future.
Please accept the assurances of our highest consideration.
