๐Ÿผ The measure was prompted by the death of a baby panda and its mother in 2024, victims of stress caused by fireworks.

๐Ÿ’” Roxie died on November 5, 2024, after choking on her own vomit, and her mother, Ginger, passed away five days earlier.

๐Ÿ“… The restriction will be in place for 10 days, between Halloween and November 9, to protect both vulnerable animals and people.

๐Ÿพ In addition, animal protection organizations are calling for:

๐Ÿ‘‰ a ban on the free sale of fireworks

๐Ÿ‘‰ replacing them with drones or light shows at organized events

How the climate crisis affects food systems ๐Ÿšœ

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall and new pathogens: a few reasons farmers decide to change their crops.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น In Italy, mango production increased significantly between 2004 and 2023. In contrast, other countries such as Mexico, Brazil and Peru saw a decline in exports of this tropical fruit.

๐Ÿฅญ According to FAO data, preliminary trade data, and industry sources published in El Paรญs, Mexico's exports fell by 2%, Brazil's by 8% and Peru's by 55% last year.

๐Ÿ“Œ Meanwhile, in areas of southern Italy, such as Sicily, Puglia, and Calabria, producers are migrating from olive cultivation to mangoes due to their profitability.

Alarm in California ๐Ÿšจ
๐Ÿ— Wild pigs were found with neon-blue meat and fat.
๐Ÿ”ต The color is due to diphacinone, an anticoagulant rodent poison used in agriculture.
โš ๏ธ Experts warn that the problem doesn't only affect pigs: it can reach predators and humans who consume poisoned animals.
๐Ÿฉธ The poison causes internal bleeding that doesn't kill instantly: the animal survives for days, becoming easy prey and multiplying the impact on the food chain.
๐Ÿ— Wild pigs eat everything they find including poisoned bait, rodents and crops. So they become a key link in the spread of the toxin.
๐Ÿ“‰ Although diphacinone was restricted in 2024, traces of it continue to appear in local wildlife.

People are aging better ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿป

๐Ÿ”ฌThe study was conducted by researchers from the US, the UK, Switzerland and Australia: the results were published in the scientific journal Nature Aging.

๐Ÿซ The project was led by John Beard of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป One of the results: โ€œGrip strength, a key marker of physical health, showed an average increase of 15% among recent groups.โ€

๐Ÿ”ด But beware, there is a class component: on average, the study showed that more privileged people aged with greater intrinsic capacity.

๐Ÿค” Therefore, the research poses two challenges to be solved:

๐ŸŸก How can we maintain functionality for longer?

๐ŸŸก How can we reduce inequality to make healthy aging more accessible?

๐ŸŒโŒ โ€œHaze seasonโ€ and โ€œtrash seasonโ€

A study from the London School of Economics warns that our climate calendar has added two new phases, created by human action:

โ˜๏ธ Haze season

-A blanket of toxic smoke extends for hundreds of miles for weeks.
-It causes respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease and even cancer.
-It recurs every year in Southeast Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
-It arises from intentional fires to free up agricultural land, especially for oil palm.

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Trash season

-It occurs every year between December and March.
-Monsoon winds carry tons of accumulated waste from the sea toward the coast.
-Beaches in Bali, the Philippines, Thailand, and the US are covered in plastics and other waste.
-Itโ€™s a reflection of decades of pollution and poor waste management.

โš ๏ธ Both phenomena are now repeating with the regularity of traditional seasons, becoming part of the planet's new environmental calendar.

A surprising finding ๐Ÿฆœ

๐Ÿ”ฌ A study published in Biology Letters revealed that s*x reversal in wild birds is more common than previously thought and could have consequences for endangered species.

๐Ÿ“Š The study from the University of the Sunshine Coast examined nearly 500 wild birds, including magpies, kookaburras, pigeons and parrots.

โš ๏ธ S*x reversal is common in fish and reptiles, but is rarely documented in birds and mammals. This finding could alter s*x ratios, mate preferences and even reduce population sizes in endangered species.

๐ŸŒ Possible causes include environmental pollution, extreme temperatures, hormone-disrupting chemicals and high stress levels.

โ€œNo longer objectsโ€ ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ The Congress of Mexico City approved a reform to the Civil Code that recognizes animals as sentient beings: โ€œthey are subjects of moral consideration and dignified treatment.โ€

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ The Constitution of Mexico City already recognized animals as sentient beings. Now, with the reform approved on August 18, 2025, they seek to harmonize all regulations and thus transform โ€œabstract principles into concrete tools for change.โ€

๐Ÿ‘ From now on, โ€œall people have the legal obligation to respect the lives of animals and ensure their well-being, according to the needs and biological characteristics of each species.โ€

โœ… "It is legally consistent and, of course, an act of justice and humanity," celebrated the representative Elvia Estrada.

๐Ÿˆ Responsible ownership: When taking care of a sentient being, the Civil Code also requires that people assume an ethical and legal commitment to its care and well-being and, therefore, must provide it with effective protection.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ‘จ The measure also addresses a recurring problem: What happens when a couple with animals separates? Through a "care plan," those involved can determine who will be responsible for the animal's custody and prevent the animals from being used as bargaining chips during the divorce process.

๐ŸฆŸ Today is World Mosquito Day

๐Ÿ“Œ What seems like a simple bite is actually more like a surgical procedure.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The female mosquito detects its victim thanks to more than 150 receptors that detect carbon dioxide, body heat, and the fatty acids released by our skin.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Once it lands, it deploys its proboscis, a kind of "biological syringe" made up of six microscopic needles:

๐Ÿ”น The maxillae, with tiny blades, pierce the skin almost without us feeling it.
๐Ÿ”น The mandibles separate the tissues to clear a path.
๐Ÿ”น The labrum searches for blood vessels following invisible chemical signals and, upon finding them, becomes the straw through which it sucks blood.
๐Ÿ”น The hypopharynx expels saliva laden with compounds that dilate the vessels and block our defenses.

๐Ÿ’‰ That saliva is what causes the rash and itching.

๐Ÿงช Meanwhile, the insect filters our protein-rich red blood cells and expels excess water to store up to 10 times more food than it could otherwise.

๐ŸŒ Eliminating stagnant water, using repellents, and installing mosquito nets are simple but effective measures against disease-carrying species.

๐ŸŒ In southern Africa, two groups of women are changing the way their communities protect wildlife.
๐Ÿฆ The Black Mambas patrol unarmed in the Balule Reserve, within Kruger National Park in South Africa.
๐Ÿ“Œ With constant surveillance, they deter poachers and have reduced rhino hunting by up to 63%. They also educate children through their Bush Babies program.
๐Ÿ˜ The Akashinga, in Zimbabwe, patrol the Phundundu National Park and protect more than 1,340 square miles.
๐Ÿ“Œ Most are survivors of domestic violence or extreme poverty, and today they are elephant guardians.
๐Ÿ“Œ The unit was created by the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF). By 2030, they hope to recruit 2,000 women to patrol more than 46,000 square miles.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ See in the dark or with your eyes closed: the promise of new infrared contact lenses developed by scientists from the US and China.

๐Ÿ”ฌ They use nanoparticles that convert infrared light into visible light. They are made of soft, non-toxic materials, similar to ordinary contact lenses.

๐ŸŒˆ They can even transform different wavelengths into different colors, and applications for colorblind people are being evaluated.

๐Ÿ’ก They are still in the experimental phase, but they mark another step towards technology to expand the human senses.

Eleven Madison Park brings back meat ๐Ÿ–

๐ŸŒฑ Four years ago, the Michelin-star fine-dining spot in Manhattan switched to a plant-based menu in pursuit of sustainability.

๐Ÿ„ Meat and other animal products like dairy generally require more land, water and greenhouse gas emissions to produce. โ€œPlant-based meat substitutes have on average 50% lower environmental impact,โ€ concluded a 2023 study.*

๐Ÿ’ต The chef and owner of the restaurant, Daniel Humm, said the restaurant had mixed financial success during its plant-based period, but the last year has been difficult to sustain.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œItโ€™s hard to get 30 people for a corporate dinner to come to a plant-based restaurant,โ€ he told The New York Times.

๐ŸŒฝ Humm said that even though meat will be served again, the menu will still be mostly plant based with the option to have a fully vegan meal.

๐Ÿšข On May 25, a cargo ship with a Liberian flag sank off the coast of Kerala, India. It was carrying more than 70,000 bags containing nurdles, small plastic spheres used to make almost all plastic products.

โŒ Three months later, millions of these pellets continue to turn up on beaches and in fishing nets. They are lightweight, float easily, and are nearly impossible to collect.

โญ• Nurdles measure between one and five millimeters. They can be mistaken for food by fish, birds, and turtles. When ingested, they carry bacteria and toxic chemicals that leach into the food chain.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ In addition to India, Sri Lanka reported new sightings of pellets. In 2021, the country suffered a similar disaster when a ship spilled more than 1,600 tons of plastic off its coast.

๐Ÿ“œ Internationally, calls for specific regulation are growing. Currently, nurdles are not classified as hazardous materials and are transported like any other cargo.

๐Ÿช™ Meanwhile, the Kerala government filed a $1.1 billion claim against the shipping company. The court ruling is still pending, but the environmental damage has already been done.
