Keyante, Alice, and Brandon from Climate Mobilization Project’s National Climate Survival Incubator cohort share what it means to build communities that can weather catastrophe — not simply by stockpiling supplies or preparing as individuals, but by creating relationships, skills, and infrastructure that allow people to take care of one another and exercise control over the systems their lives depend on.

Super El Niño’s coming. But the people who will save us are already at work.

As climate journalist David Wallace-Wells wrote, “The world is about to get a preview of life in 2035" — including droughts, flooding, intensified cyclones, crop failures.

But these systemic ruptures are also openings for all of us building grassroots solutions. And the people on the frontlines are three steps ahead.

On September 17 from 7-8:30pm EST, The Climate Mobilization is hosting a virtual national town hall on the 2026 Super El Niño – bringing together climate science, grassroots solutions, and social movements to build communities that are resilient, and ready as access to food, energy, water, and our basic needs are weaponized against our people.

Hear from:
* Climate scientist William Cano on Super El Niño’s real impacts, myths, and how to build our collective literacy on extreme weather;
* BIPOC resilience practitioners Brandon Bunt (Kiau Technologies), Keyante Aytch (Daze of Autonomy), and Alice Liu from West Street Recovery. Alongside other participants in Climate Mobilization Project’s National Climate Survival Incubator are developing concrete infrastructure solutions in 16 frontline communities – including disaster hubs, solar microgrids, disaster communication systems, regenerative food systems, ecological resilience training centers, and more;

Climate Mobilization Project’s team just held a member-led session “From Shock to Climate Survival: Taking the Leap” at New Economy Coalition’s assembly in Durham, North Carolina – which brought together 120+ leaders across the U.S. that are building solidarity economy projects including land projects, worker cooperatives, mission-driven businesses, grassroots community organizations, and more.

Rooted in learnings from Climate Mobilization Project's work to resource grassroots survival hubs & infrastructure as on-ramps to localized community-controlled economies around food, energy, water, land, housing, tech, & health/care, we reflected on the economic shocks of 2026 and asked:

Where are the most concrete openings & potential “leaps” we can take for solidarity economy development right now?

What somatic & human factors do we need to attune to to cultivate a “means of possibility” in an era of fear & unknown?

And what do survival initiatives need in order to become scalable engines of grassroots economic change?

We can’t wait to build deeper collaborations with workshop participants and leaders across New Economy Coalition's ecosystem!

As CMP's Co-Leader said during the session:

"Every one of these threads — land, food, energy, housing, health, tech, water— is the same story: the systems people we were told to depend on are visibly retreating, and that retreat is opening real, concrete vacuums faster than most of us are used to operating at.

Localized, community-controlled economies aren’t a nice-to-have alternatives anymore — they’re becoming the more economically rational, more stable option, in real time.

The question this session is built around is whether we’re organized enough, and whether we have the human and emotional capacity, to take that opening before it closes back up."

Leaping into the Unknown is a new series of online gatherings that will provide a closer look at the approaches grassroots leaders at the frontlines of climate collapse are using to grow survival hubs and build new worlds.

The first call in the series will feature a report back from the National Climate Survival Incubator gathering, where young BIPOC climate leaders from 17 communities spent a week building skills and learning from each others’ survival initiatives. We’ll gather lessons from these local survival projects about building resistance movements rooted in spirituality and an embodied connection to land.

As the global fuel and fertilizer crisis escalates, we’ll explore strategies for building movements and solidarity economies rooted in food, land, energy, water, and tech sovereignty and self-determination.

And together, we’ll talk about creative ways for you to plant seeds of survival today -- bringing these approaches to your block, your organization or another part of your community.
