Hello all! This Sugar Vendil, the founder of NCP. We had a great run. The ensemble is winding down, as in, ending. We are touring our final program this year, which includes my piece "ooh wo aa oo wa o" with costumes designed by Jasmine Chong. The premiere was in December at Brooklyn Public Library.
I founded NCP because I thought there was a way to for me to exist in classical music outside the structures and strictures of that world: competitions, concert black, etc. There's nothing wrong with black, but there's something wrong about being punished for making a different choice. People thought this was just about fashion but it was really about having agency over my own body, the body without which the music would not exist, and the permission to have my own aesthetic point of view!
To make a long story short, I've been creating my own work since around 2017, so this final program is the perfect way to both end and begin.
Speaking of endings, I'm also deleting all my social media accounts, which includes this page. If you're interested in my work and news about NCP's final performances, please check out sugarvendil.com and subscribe to my e-letter: https://tinyletter.com/sugarvendil.
I love the musicians of NCP: Laura C***s, Mara Mayer, Maya Bennardo, Thea Mesirow and I'm sure we'll still be making music together after this. And I'm so grateful to everyone who was ever a part of this, especially the early times when I was a hot f****** mess and sometimes, a PoS! Thanks to anyone who's ever come to a show. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
