In Loving Memory of Max ❤️🐾
Max came into our lives from a shelter in New Jersey, where he and Sasha became the original two rescues of VFCR. When Max first arrived, he was understandably anxious, hyper-aroused, and overwhelmed by the world around him. But in late 2018, his life began to change.
With time, patience, love, and the freedom to simply be himself, Max transformed. He had his own private RV, complete with air conditioning and heat, and the peaceful environment gave him the opportunity to learn how to self-soothe and feel safe. And once Max discovered that he was safe, his wonderful personality truly began to shine.
Max loved people—and people absolutely adored Max. Whenever visitors arrived, he would become incredibly excited, ready to greet everyone and soak up all the attention, affection, and belly rubs he could get. He was a true goofball, full of personality and charm. He got along with every dog and loved running around the property, sometimes mischievously wandering off just far enough to make someone go looking for him. More often than not, he could be found visiting his aunt’s little dogs on the other side of the property.
Max also had an unforgettable bark. To those who knew him, it almost seemed to say, “You know who I am! Give me some attention!” And of course, Max was never one to turn down a treat.
Some of Max’s sweetest memories were made during his time with Jenn and Igor. One Thanksgiving, Max was given a little vacation from the shelter and spent the holiday in their home. There were treats on the table—and, in a hilarious case of mistaken identity, Jenn began eating them, not realizing they were actually Max’s! Everyone eventually had to explain why they were laughing. 😅
But that story also perfectly captured Max’s gentle nature. During the entire Thanksgiving visit, Max never once tried to jump on the table or steal food. Instead, he simply walked around, greeting everyone and collecting belly rubs. At one point, he peacefully lay down on the floor beside Igor, completely content just to be part of the family.
Max loved his walks near the cliffs of Cliffside Park, especially through the residential neighborhoods. He would stop to greet lawn statues as if introducing himself to new friends. Sometimes, he would simply lie down in the grass, roll onto his back, and enjoy the sunshine, the breeze, and the beautiful view of the New York City skyline.
And then there were the sweet potatoes. Max absolutely loved cooked sweet potatoes, and whenever Jenn brought them for the dogs, Max was always more than happy to enjoy a snack.
Max was also blessed to have so many wonderful people who loved him, supported him, and made sure he knew how special he was. Jenn, Igor, Dan, Ivy, Edie, Eddie, and so many other volunteers gave Max their time, their kindness, their friendship, and their love over the years. Each person who cared for Max became part of his story and helped make his life richer and happier.
A very special thank you must go to Janine and Stewart, who loved Max deeply and supported him in such an extraordinary way. They extended themselves for Max time and time again and financially sponsored him all the way until his very last day. Janine and Stewart were Max’s favorites—and it was easy to see how much he loved them. Their love, generosity, and commitment to Max meant more than words can ever express. They made sure that Max was cared for, cherished, and never alone. ❤️
Max was a dog who found his way from fear and anxiety to comfort, happiness, friendship, and love. He was mischievous, silly, affectionate, independent, and completely unforgettable. He loved running, exploring, treats, belly rubs, people, dogs, sunshine, and simply being Max.
He was given a second chance—and he made the absolute most of it.
Max, you were loved more than you could ever have known. Your famous bark, your goofy personality, your mischievous adventures, your sweet face, and the joy you brought to so many people will never be forgotten.
You were one of the originals. You were one of a kind.
Run free, sweet Max. You will be missed more than words can say.
