Reach Out and Read of Greater New York

Reach Out and Read of Greater New York works with pediatricians to provide books and literacy guidance to New York's youngest children.

DONATE: www.reachoutandreadnyc.org/donate Reach Out and Read is an innovative program that partners with pediatricians to provide free, new books to America's youngest children and literacy guidance to their parents, with an emphasis on encouraging parents to read aloud with their children daily. The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. At each checkup, children receive a free developmentally-appropriate book to keep, and parents or caretakers are counseled on the importance of reading aloud to children for the development of language and pre-reading skills. Children who participate in Reach Out and Read have stronger vocabularies and language skills, and start school ready to learn to read.

We had an amazing time at NYC Health + Hospitals Queens with children’s book author Molly Arbuthnott! 📚 We loved hearing Oscar the Hebridean Cat come to life during a special story time in the clinic.

The Reach Out & Read model emphasizes the importance of making literacy a part of pediatric care. What better way to get families in the reading spirit than with an in-person story time? ❤️

Today we remember September 11, 2001. We honor the first responders and others who lost their lives, and we remember the victims, families, and survivors whose lives were forever changed 25 years ago.

Events like 9/11 can bring up difficult emotions and questions for all of us, including children. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum offers helpful guidance for parents and caregivers on how to navigate these conversations with children.
