The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of design and art

Since 2001, CUP has worked with artists, designers, organizers, advocates, teachers, and youth across the city to create public education, in schools and communities, about the policies and systems that make up New York City. From community land ownership to labor rights to support for immigrants, we use art and design to increase access to knowledge and information that supports communities to assert their rights, access social services, and work together to build power.

As an organization that values creativity, shared knowledge, and collaboration—all of which are alive and thriving at the fair—we're excited to support the community of artists that BKABF brings together ♥️

On April 22 we hosted our fourth How We Made This about one of our latest Making Policy Public resources, Bringing Land and Housing into Community Hands, created in partnership with NYC Community Land Initiative (NYCCLI) and artist, Ish*ta Jain.

We reflected yesterday on how exciting the energy in the room was — with over 100 people eager to connect with each other, meet the community advocates and artists we’re working with this year, and reflect on art and design’s role in uplifting the rights and visions of New York City’s communities.

We have a lot of people to thank for being part of this year’s How We Made This: NYC Community Land Initiative, South Bronx Unite, New Economy Project, the team at CUP, our volunteers; and our community of support who showed up to deepen their connection to land and housing justice, and the role of artists and designers in supporting community-driven education. Thank you for being with us this year. We can’t wait to invite you all back in 2027.

Every year, through our Community Education program Making Policy Public, CUP collaborates with four teams to create educational resources that explain complex policies and systems affecting communities across the city. We’re proud to share that our 2025 collaborations are launching this spring with our community partners distributing over 1,000 copies of each resource throughout the year.

Our collaborative practice is as meaningful as what we ultimately create together. Thank you to our community partners for their leadership and commitment to using art to uplift the rights and visions of the communities they work with; the community members who shared their knowledge and shaped the narratives, language, and artwork in each resource; the artists and designers whose thoughtfulness and creativity is felt on each page; and to the CUP team for guiding everyone through this collaborative process with great care.
