Ahead of Ethiopia's general election on June 1, CPJ spoke with journalists who say it has been impossible to report effectively on the poll due to intimidation and censorship. Read more in ‘Under the shadow of fear' ➡ https://cpj.org/?p=592637

In the countdown to Ethiopia’s June 1 election, The Reporter Magazine's Bewket Abebe flew to the town of Humera to report from one of the country’s most contested territories. He never made his meeting.

Security personnel searched his phone and detained him for three days in a crowded cell.

“The detention place was overflowing and crammed. It was hot and unsanitary,” Bewket told CPJ.

With journalists summoned, arrested, threatened, and pushed into self-censorship, Ethiopian reporters say the real election story is fear and the public is being left in the dark.

Good news 🎉 Senegalese journalist René Capain Bassène — an innocent man who was serving a life sentence for a murder he didn’t commit — has been released after 8 years in prison.

CPJ’s Francophone Africa Representative Moussa Ngom is on the ground with Bassène to celebrate his release.

This is a win for journalism, for Bassène’s innocence, and a win for press freedom. CPJ is grateful to everyone who has stood in solidarity in the fight for his release.

⚽️ CPJ has advised journalists traveling to the U.S. for the 2026 World Cup to prepare for questioning or hostility from immigration officials at the border. Domestic and international journalists may encounter law enforcement and disorderly crowds at matches and fan events. That’s why we’ve compiled safety resources to help journalists minimize risks and protect themselves against potential threats while covering the World Cup.

: Today marks the third anniversary of the imprisonment of Myanmar Now photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike, who is serving a 20-year sentence for sedition. Sai Zaw Thaike was arrested on May 23, 2023, while reporting on the aftermath of Cyclone Mocha in Sittwe, the capital of western Rakhine state, where at least 148 people were killed and many members of the persecuted Rohingya minority were living in internally displaced persons camps. His arrest for simply documenting the humanitarian impact of the cyclone underscores the grave risks journalists face in Myanmar.

In January 2025, Sai Zaw Thaike was reportedly subjected to “daily physical abuse” and “retaliatory torture” while in detention. His continued imprisonment reflects the broader collapse of press freedom in Myanmar since the 2021 military coup. The country remains one of the world’s worst jailers of journalists, with at least 18 currently behind bars.

CPJ calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Sai Zaw Thaike and all imprisoned journalists in Myanmar, and for the withdrawal of charges brought against them in retaliation for their reporting.
