Sonia Nabeta Foundation We believe in an Africa where children with type 1 diabetes have an equal chance at long, healthy, productive and gainful lives .

The Sonia Nabeta Foundation aims to alleviate the hefty cost of treatment and provide holistic mind, body and spirit healthcare for low income children with Type 1 Diabetes in Africa (starting with Uganda). For these underserved communities, the Sonia Nabeta Foundation will partner with healthcare providers and other partners around the world to:

Provide blood sugar monitoring devices, test stri

ps, Hba1c monitoring and other essential tests and supplies;

Host holistic wellness workshops that integrate the mind, body and spirit into the T1D care and management regime;

Sponsor awareness campaigns, diagnosis drives and healthcare worker training to reduce deaths from lack of awareness and/or diagnosis;

Advocate for T1D to be part of standard emergency and non-emergency procedures at all general hospitals.

SOUTH-SOUTH EXCHANGE. Uganda's Clinician Allen Nabisere, Tanzania's Dr. Bernard Samuel Kakala and Sierra Leone's Dr. Sallamatu Kabia each brought experience from three different health systems to Camp Wanwod last week, along with the opportunity to learn directly from one another.

There is enormous value in health workers across Africa sharing what works, what doesn't and what they have learned on the frontline. Ideas can be tested in different settings, adapted to local realities and improved through the experience of others.

This South South Exchange builds expertise and relationships across the region, creating the kind of capacity that can be sustained long after any single program or partnership end. 💜

IT TAKES A TEAM. Warrior Coordinator Warida, Warrior Educator Gladys and Nurse Caroline each bring something different to the table. Here they are comparing notes, discussing what warriors need, learn from one another and figure out what needs to happen next.

This relationship between our health workers and peer leaders is a very important part of how we work. Clinical knowledge, lived experience and a deep understanding of the community belong in the same conversation.

And judging by this picture, there is always plenty to talk about!💜

WHEN YOU CAN SEE IT, You can dream it and you can become it! Meet 11-year-old warrior Robert from the T1D Clinic at Yumbe Referral Hospital in northern Uganda. Robert wants to be an architect, just like Emmanuel Kisembo, SNF's Program Manager for Special Initiatives.

Emmanuel has built a career he loves as an architect while living with type 1 diabetes. He also uses his voice and lived experience through SNF and initiatives including PenPlus and dedoc° to effect change.

There is something special about little warriors meeting older warriors who give them a glimpse of what is possible. For Robert, that happens to be an architect just like Emmanuel.

We can't wait to see what he builds. 💜

VICTORY FOR ALL. Camp WanWod has come to a close! There may have been one trophy, but there were no losers.

Every warrior has left with something worth celebrating like new friends, greater confidence, stronger leadership, practical tips and tricks for living with their condition, and the knowledge that they are part of a community that stretches beyond countries and conditions.

That's a victory worth taking home! 💜
