PUBLIC HEALTH VIGILANCE. Protecting warriors goes beyond type 1 diabetes. As an organization working in health, part of our responsibility and duty of care is remaining vigilant and implementing appropriate screening, protection and health education measures in response to public health threats, including the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the DRC & Uganda.

We encourage warriors and families to stay informed and follow guidance from Ministry of Health and public health authorities.💜

JUST ANOTHER PART OF OUR DAY. For many warriors, taking insulin is not extraordinary. It is simply part of our day to day!

Yet still, as lifesaving as it is, and as much a basic human right as it should be, insulin remains out of reach for far too many children around the world.

Today, we celebrate those who have access to it and those continue to advocate for those who do not.💜

WHAT ARE KETONES? 💜 Ketones are acids produced when the body starts breaking down fat for energy because it does not have enough insulin.

Small amounts may not be a concern, but moderate to high ketones can be a warning sign that a Warrior is at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Knowing when and how to check for ketones is an important part of managing type 1 diabetes and staying safe.

When in doubt, check.

WHEN YOUR BIG BROTHER GETS IT. For Little Warrior Evalina, type 1 diabetes is not a road she walks alone. At home, she has a big brother who understands the life of a warrior all too well, the highs, the lows and everything in between. There is something powerful about being understood.

Fun fact: while type 1 diabetes is not directly inherited, siblings of warriors have an estimated 6-7% chance of developing the condition themselves. Today, we celebrate the strength of family and the power of shared understanding. 💜

NO RETREAT. NO SURRENDER. "I know that you come from a humble family because I do too."

Those are the opening words from Warrior Emmanuel Kisembo, SNF's Programs Manager for Special Initiatives. In this message from Camp Okpo, Emmanuel is joined by fellow Warrior Mustapha Abdallah, a Warrior Educator from the T1D clinic at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, and Camp Counselor Honest Opakwroth from the T1D Clinic at Nebbi hospital and they share their experiences in English, Lugbara and Alur.

Together, they speak of the realities many warriors know all too well of growing up in humble circumstances, struggling to achieve good blood sugar levels, carrying type 1 diabetes into every part of life from school, work, friendships, sleep. Every day brings new challenges.

But they also speak about making a choice not to give up, a choice not to let type 1 diabetes decide what is possible, a choice to keep going, even when the road ahead feels difficult!

Through their stories, Emmanuel, Mustapha and Honest remind us that poverty does not have to define our future. Fear does not have to define our future. A diagnosis does not have to define our future. The cycle can end with us. We can choose a different path.

This is a message from warriors to warriors. A reminder that no matter where you come from, no matter how difficult things may seem today, there is still a future worth fighting for!

Because what is within one warrior is also within another.

No retreat. No surrender. 💜
