Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act Inc. This is the official page for Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act Inc. We could not let that happen. But we are not stopping.

Citizens for the Extension of the Zadroga Act is dedicated to continuing health care & compensation for sick and injured 9/11 Responders & Survivors After years of Washington ignoring the thousands of injured and ill 9/11 Responders and Survivors Congress was finally shamed into passing The “James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act” in 2010. Because of the outpouring of

support for the heroes of 9/11, thousands of injured responders and survivors finally started to get the comprehensive treatment for their injuries and illnesses and the compensation for their economic losses from their injuries that they needed and deserved. However, the 2010 legislation was due to totally expire in 2016, leaving these heroes, survivors and their families without the medical care and support they need. That is why Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act Inc. was created by the unions and groups that worked to get Washington to respond to the health crisis facing so many. Our mission was to make sure the legislation would be renewed and extended. Citizens for the Extension of the James Zadroga Act and a broad coalitions of unions and advocates worked over the years to build overwhelming Congressional support for 9/11 responders and survivors. In 2015 that work resulted in the Congress taking action and making the World Trade Center Health Program permanent and extending the Speteber11th Victim Compensation Fund for an additional five years and providing 4.6 billion dollars more to ensure that all those injured are fully compensated for their 9/11 injuries. We made sure that the programs that are helping injured and ill 9/11 responders and survivors get the medical treatment and assistance that they need and deserve were continued. Citizens for the Extension will be working in the coming years to make sure that in 2020, when the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund has to be renewed that Congress will in fact continue to remember 9/11 and the injured and ill responders, survivors and their families. Heart diseases won't be put on the list of covered health issues for 9/11 responders and survivors, the head of the World Trade Center Health Program recently ruled.
The negative finding, in response to petitions seeking coverage through the World Trade Center Health Program for ischemic heart disease, cited "insufficient evidence" when it was filed June 29 in the Federal Register.
The ruling is being questioned by first responders exposed to toxins during and after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the doctors who oversee their care......

"I'll never talk bad about the health program," responder Richard Palmer said. "But I don't really understand the reason why cardiac isn't added."

08/13/2026

"While this decision is clearly disappointing to the many 9/11 responders and survivors that have cardiac conditions that believe their conditions are connected to their 9/11 experience, we need to remember that 15 years ago the initial decision was to deny adding cancer as a condition, which was su...

Thank you Nick LaLota for pushing U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to hire all of the 37 staff for World Trade Center Health Program

Our brave 9/11 First Responders deserve care that meets their needs, not a program struggling to fill vacancies.

With the 25th anniversary approaching and enrollment still growing, we can’t afford to lose the momentum we have gained in staffing the World Trade Center Health Program.

I’m staying on top of this until it’s right.
