Oahu Search and Rescue

Oahu Search and Rescue Oahu Search and Rescue (OSAR) is a volunteer-based wilderness search and rescue organization with the aim of preventing and finding lost hikers on Oahu.

The primary purpose of Oahu Search and Rescue is to assist individuals who may experience mountain or wilderness-related problems, and to educate the public in order to prevent SAR emergencies. These range from incidents such as falls or medical emergencies, lost or overdue hikers, heat or cold exposure, and more. Some of our group is highly skilled in wilderness first-aid, technical rescue, orien

teering and tracking, and others are working towards higher certification level. These skills enable Oahu Search & Rescue members to safely and efficiently locate patients in the field and get them to appropriate medical care in case of injury. We currently have approximately 30 volunteers that sacrifice their time and personal resources to assist those in need.

This week OSAR members spent several hours in the classroom learning the basics of wilderness survival before heading out into the field to practice their newly learned skills. Team members practiced constructing emergency shelters, making fire, signaling, finding and making water safe to drink.

Ever wonder what it feels like to get lost in the woods? To better understand what some of our search subjects go through, three of our team members were blindfolded (very stylishly we might add) and walked on a random route through the woods for 30 minutes before being cut loose to find their way home.

Team members utilized S.T.O.P. (sit, think, observe, plan) to get oriented before starting their journeys (mostly in the right direction) back to base camp.
