Treat yourself to a mug made by Elizabeth -- there's no better start to your day. The care she puts in to carefully crafting her pieces is will be felt when you use these beautiful vessels in your kitchen.

Elizabeth shares:
"I started working with clay on the wheel in high school. As any beginner wheel thrower can tell you, it was not instant success, but once I got the hang of it I was hooked. I’ve been at Greenwich House Pottery off and on since 2010. What keeps me coming back is the camaraderie and support. I have learned so much from the wonderful instructors I’ve worked with over the years, and from my classmates who have helped me master so many new techniques and always offer encouragement. It’s a warm community full of people making beautiful things and I feel inspired every time I walk through the door.

I love making functional pottery. Living in NYC, space is limited, so I want people’s cabinets and tabletops to serve as their own personal gallery. Using a beautifully handcrafted piece to drink your coffee or eat your morning oatmeal brightens your day. I like to experiment with surface decoration and lately I’ve been working more with slips and sgraffito.

Made in Clay is always a great experience. It’s a wonderful way to see all the creativity coming out of GHP. I’m so impressed with my fellow artists and so grateful for the wider community that comes out to support us each year."

Our Made in Clay takeover continues and the countdown is on! Today we bring you our talented Gallery and Residency Manager, Kaitlin McClure!

Kaitlin gave us some insight into the making of these sculptural yet functional artworks:
"I hand build ceramic vessels whose twisting forms embrace absence as presence. Their hollow coils arc up through the air, framing the open space and embracing it as part of the form. The vessels are punctuated by spouts that offer footholds for live plants or cut flowers to pour down the vessels’ sides or stretch out into space. Like cliff faces in miniature, they stand as surfaces down which life clings, wanders, cascades. In this way, the vessels are both container and companion: simultaneously holding and offering, framing and releasing. These vessels generously offer up the bounty of the seen and the unseen world, which is always there if only we notice."

Don't miss her sweetly crafted agateware with its luscious luster detail from Jessica Du. Available only at Made in Clay this weekend!

Jessica let us know:
"I'm honored to be participating in GHP's Made in Clay holiday sale for the first time, and I am especially excited to share my work alongside my talented colleagues and classmates at GHP and the wonderful staff. I started my clay journey at Greenwich House in 2021 and am always excited to come to the studio to learn something new. GHP has a wonderful community and knowledgeable staff. It feels very special to be making and creating at such a historic New York institution, where pottery greats have also worked and taught. My work currently focuses on agateware pots, detailed etchings, and other wheel thrown functional forms, of which I am bringing many to Made in Clay!"

Don't miss out. It's 2 days only.

Today we introduce an artist new to the Made in Clay holiday sale: Adrienne Cisley Rose.

We love what Adrienne had to share:
"I started working in clay in 2023, and Greenwich House Pottery was one of the first places that welcomed me into the ceramics world. I fell in love not only with handbuilding, but with the warmth and generosity of the community here. Lately I’ve been experimenting with dark brown clay and iron oxide washes, a combination I first started playing with at GHP. Being part of Made in Clay for my first ever ceramics market feels incredibly special, like returning some of the warmth this place sparked in me from the very beginning. Truly a full circle moment."

Today's featured artist: Arlene Jacobs ✨

Arlene shares:
I think of Greenwich House as my “happy place”, and I always look forward to my classes and sessions among a group of fun and friendly people. I started working with clay when I was a teenager, many years ago. Life intervened for many years during my working and child-rearing days, although I managed to take several workshops at GHP. I rediscovered Greenwich House Pottery during Covid, when I took online classes.

I feel so fortunate to spend time in such a welcoming place where the staff is kind and supportive. Each instructor I’ve worked with has been talented, passionate about the craft, patient, and encouraging, and I feel I’ve made great progress in my work. I work in both porcelain and white stoneware, and I enjoy the process of surface design, using textures and/or underglazes.

I look forward to the Made in Clay sale each year, where I meet lots of curious people interested in my work. I enjoy sharing my ideas and discussing my process.

Today's artist feature : Michelle Kaufmann!

Michelle’s work is rooted in lifelong curiosity and a love for transformation. With artists on one side of her family and scientists on the other, she grew up encouraged to experiment and create. Early memories of collecting found objects with her grandmother and turning them into something meaningful still shape her instinct to see potential everywhere. That spirit eventually led her to clay, a material that responds to touch and invites endless exploration.

Michelle began working with clay in 2000 when she started wheel throwing. She found her creative home at Greenwich House Pottery in 2007. GHP holds an especially personal significance: her grandfather once studied in the very same building at 16 Jones Street when it served as a stone-cutting and wood-carving school. It’s also where Michelle's own practice expanded to also include handbuilding and slipcasting, always being supported by a generous community of teachers, staff, and fellow artists.

She creates whimsical, functional ceramics that celebrate imperfection and individuality. Each piece carries its own personality in every ripple, glaze drip, and asymmetry, aiming to bring warmth and a sense of wonder into everyday life.

Participating in Made in Clay is a highlight of her year. It’s a chance to share new work, connect with the community, and celebrate the joy of handmade ceramics.
