The UJA-Federation of NY and the Jewish Agency for Israel sponsored and the 'Shlichut' program (emissary) in Brooklyn, NY. Since summer 2013, the Brownstone Brooklyn community has been a host to an incredibly special Israel engagement and community building program, the Brooklyn-Israel Connection. This program brings to Brooklyn a Senior Shaliach (an educational emissary from Israel), and Shinshin
im (Israeli young adults who have elected to take a year off after high school, and before the army, to do voluntary service). Together, the Senior Shaliach and the Shinishinim work in different institutions to make Israel a living and meaningful point of engagement. The Senior Shaliach is responsible for working with professionals and lay leaders in the community to develop meaningful connections to both Israel and Judaism. The Senior Shaliach connects professionals and lay leaders from throughout the community to develop meaningful programming in both their institutions and the broader community. He creates and implements her own programs, as well as mentors and oversees the Shinshinim in their work, and represents UJA-Federation of NY and JAFI in the community. The Shinshinim work in each institution in a variety of capacities: creating and running institution specific programs, such as running Hebrew School classes, informal educational events, and staffing Hashomer Hatzair youth group chapters. Each Shinshinim lives with 2 host families during their stay, which provides another engagement experience for members of the Brooklyn community. This project is funded by UJA-Federation of New York, and overseen by the Jewish Agency. Brooklyn Institutions Involved (in alphabetical order) -
