Intimacy begins with vulnerability. If you desire to go deeper, take the risk to share yourself in a new way. Be prudent, but be bold with your brothers, your small group or whoever is accompanying you on your journey with Christ.

Weep with them. Let them receive you. Ask them to grieve with you. Inviting them in, you will see how Our Lord is present in this communion sustaining and supporting you in His redemptive love.

Jesus, Master, Maker and Lord of my heart, show me what it means to be real, honest, and vulnerable.

Allow me to give and to receive love like you do. I fear vulnerability, and I don’t know how to love, so you must teach me. Amen.

Why St. Francis Wanted to Suffer

—

This year marks 800 years since the death of St. Francis of Assisi. To mark the anniversary, we're travelling to friaries across the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal to sit down with the friars and hear, in their own words, what St. Francis means to them — how they first encountered him, what drew them to the Franciscan life, and what the Poverello continues to teach them today.

Brotherhood is a school of maturity that prepares us for our destiny of complete and total self-gift.

Our teacher and model is Jesus. Jesus loves us and stands beside us as a brother.

Clothed in the same frail flesh, He has run the race ahead of us, and remains with us always as we seek to find our way home to the Father’s House in heaven. Learning from Jesus, we can learn to daily risk to love with his heart.

God has given each of us brothers, friends to stand and fight and labor and pray and sacrifice alongside us. Let us learn from Jesus by learning from the brothers God has entrusted to us. They have and will teach you more than these poor words will.

As Saint Francis called on his brothers before he took his last breath, “Let us begin, brothers, to serve the Lord God, for up to now we have done little or nothing.”

Stress and worry are not opponents for us to face. Stress and worry are invitations to experience communion.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is our secret and stable source of peace. During the consecration we are invited to give our intentions, as well as our burdens to the Lord. Jesus as High Priest receives our offerings, just as he receives and consecrates ordinary bread and w**e.

During this moment of the Mass, we can not only name, but also entrust to Jesus our concerns or emotional disturbances. Our stress or anxieties don't simply 'vanish;' often, they move us to action. We need to 'do something' with the interior movements we feel. The liturgy is a sacred encounter where we can come before Our Heavenly Father and ask Him to care for us, to intervene for us, and to beg the grace we need to make us and the responses of our hearts new.

Joined to Jesus' Eucharistic Sacrifice, you are bringing the 'ordinary' aspects of your life, and allowing them in faith to become an offering to God. Bring Jesus the person or situation, the feeling or the burden you carry. Your offering joined to Christ's will not be unchanged. In communion with Christ, our crosses become a place of intimacy, love and life.

Our next Catholic Underground will be on October 3, 2026 at 7:30pm at Our Lady of Good Counsel

Please note: We will celebrate on Oct. 3 the 800th anniversary of St. Francis's passing. For this reason, the Holy Hour will be replaced by the celebration of the Transitus of our Holy Father St. Francis, which will include music and prayer. There will be no exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, but confessions will still be available. This will be followed by a social gathering and Franciscan Art Exhibit.

See you there!
