Italian Welfare League

In 1920, the League set up headquarters at Lexington Avenue in Manhattan and opened a branch office on Union Street in Brooklyn.

The Italian Welfare League has a rich history of social service, which began at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and continues to help children with special needs. From these strategic points, it provided case work, home visitation, interpretation and translation, legal counsel, medical care, and also taught immigrants the English language, how to apply for American citizenship and about the rights and duties of citizens. Money was raised through aggressive membership drives and by throwing benefit concerts, dances, and co-sponsoring cultural events with local churches and clubs. Its efforts were quite successful thanks to the large Italian population and the enthusiastic support of the Italian ambassador, his wife, and other prominent figures such as master conductor Arturo Toscanini, operatic diva Rosa Ponselle, and tenor Jan Peerce.

Once again, we are proud to participate in New York City’s annual Columbus Day Parade on Monday, October 12, 2026! ❤️🤍💚

Join us as we march along Fifth Avenue alongside our Italian Welfare League float, celebrating Italian-American heritage, culture, traditions, and achievements—all while proudly representing our mission of supporting “I Nostri Bambini.” 🇮🇹✨

Want to march with us? RSVP by September 25th by emailing [email protected]. Participants will receive meeting details and will be asked to sign a waiver.

At just 4½ years old, Harry is on the autism spectrum and continues to make meaningful strides through occupational therapy. Through our I Nostri Bambini program, the Italian Welfare League was honored to provide Harry with a grant to help him continue the therapy sessions he enjoys. 💚🤍❤️

And the sweetest thank-you came straight from Harry and his family:

The Italian Welfare League continues to proudly support Dana on her incredible journey. 💚🤍❤️

Following a non-fatal drowning, Dana sustained a hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. Today, she relies on feeding tubes, is unable to walk, and communicates through blinking.

Through ongoing stem cell treatments and neurotherapies, Dana continues to make meaningful progress. One remarkable milestone has been her ability to communicate using a computerized spelling chart—allowing her to have conversations, share her thoughts, and express herself with her family. ❤️

And most recently, Dana celebrated another beautiful milestone: receiving her First Holy Communion. ✝️🙏

It is because of the generosity of our supporters that the Italian Welfare League can continue helping children like Dana and their families access therapies and opportunities that can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

We are so proud of you, Dana, and we continue to cheer you on every step of the way. 🇮🇹✨💚🤍❤️

This year IWL’s annual Luncheon will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2026 at the Metropolitan Club, 1 East 60th Street, New York, NY.

The Autumn in New York luncheon is our primary means of raising funds which are distributed throughout the year to children of Italian descent who are in need.
The proceeds from this gala allow us to continue to help children who suffer from physical disabilities and serious emotional trauma. Since 2001, the League’s ‘I Nostri Bambini’ campaign has donated more than $3,600,000. In addition to individual cases, funds are also given to many organizations that help Italian-American children.

Lorenzo loved his second hippotherapy session at Occupational Therapy in Motion at Pal-O-Mine and looked forward to it all week! Through this incredible program, he’s building strength, confidence, and fine motor skills. 💚🤍❤️

Because of the generosity of our donors, the Italian Welfare League is proud to provide grants to organizations like Speech Language Pathology in Motion, giving children access to therapies that help them grow, build confidence, and reach their fullest potential.
