Italian Welfare League In 1920, the League set up headquarters at Lexington Avenue in Manhattan and opened a branch office on Union Street in Brooklyn.

The Italian Welfare League has a rich history of social service, which began at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and continues to help children with special needs. From these strategic points, it provided case work, home visitation, interpretation and translation, legal counsel, medical care, and also taught immigrants the English language, how to apply for American citizenship and about the rig

hts and duties of citizens. Money was raised through aggressive membership drives and by throwing benefit concerts, dances, and co-sponsoring cultural events with local churches and clubs. Its efforts were quite successful thanks to the large Italian population and the enthusiastic support of the Italian ambassador, his wife, and other prominent figures such as master conductor Arturo Toscanini, operatic diva Rosa Ponselle, and tenor Jan Peerce.

This year IWL’s annual Luncheon will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2026 at the Metropolitan Club, 1 East 60th Street, New York, NY.

The Autumn in New York luncheon is our primary means of raising funds which are distributed throughout the year to children of Italian descent who are in need.
The proceeds from this gala allow us to continue to help children who suffer from physical disabilities and serious emotional trauma. Since 2001, the League’s ‘I Nostri Bambini’ campaign has donated more than $3,600,000. In addition to individual cases, funds are also given to many organizations that help Italian-American children.

Because of the generosity of our donors, the Italian Welfare League is proud to provide grants to organizations like Speech Language Pathology in Motion, giving children access to therapies that help them grow, build confidence, and reach their fullest potential.
