🌿 ¡El Yunque llega a El Barrio! 🌿

NATURA at Taller Boricua brings together Arte Yunque’s inaugural artist cohort, embodying a poetic exploration at the intersection of art, nature, and El Yunque. The exhibited works delve into the intricate interplay among these elements, addressing themes such as the political dimensions of the landscape, the richness of biodiversity, the significance of soil, and enduring traditions.

Featuring commissioned installations by Migdalia Luz Barens-Vera, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda, Jorge González Santos, Ivelisse Jiménez, Guillermo Rodríguez, Jaime & Javier Suárez, and Omar Obdulio Peña Forty, the works in NATURA were originally conceived and installed within El Portal Visitor Center Trail in Río Grande and have now been thoughtfully adapted for presentation in the gallery.

In this new setting, the exhibition opens a dialogue between the rainforest and a traditional gallery space, creating connections between diasporic communities and ancestral landscapes while exploring art’s capacity to bridge cultural identity, environmental consciousness, and collective memory.

Earlier today, artist James Cuebas opened his bag and showed students his classic Rolleiflex film camera that's produced the work featured in "Light, Memory & the Hand-Made Print."

Young adults, emerging artists who already study with curator Albert, got to witness the tools, techniques, and decades of practice behind the art on these walls.

The conversations with the students moved between James and Albert with real depth, the kind that only happens when young artists sit across from someone who's spent a lifetime asking hard questions with curiosity.

James told us it was heartfelt to offer this intimate experience. This is mentorship. This is how legacies continue. We hope to welcome more curious groups of all walks and ages to experience this exhibition and connect directly with our artists. 📸

As a scholar and sociologist, as well as a collector, Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas understood the profound impact that culture had on Chicano, Latino, and Latinx art in the United States. As a sociologist, he mastered the concept of unity within society, always evolving and transforming the environment. This work involved exposing his generous heart and love for those he chose to embrace as "familia." Gil provided that sense of physical and spiritual support that will be remembered always.

That "Abrazo Cárdenas" will be engraved in everyone's collective psyche as we mourn his transition while simultaneously celebrating his extraordinary life and legacy.

Gil loved California and Indiana, but Texas became his home state in his later years because of his beloved wife, Dolores García. But we must be clear: as much as he was a West Coast native and longtime Midwest resident, Gil loved New York City. He especially loved El Barrio. His absolute love for El Barrio was manifested in his support of Taller Boricua and his service as Trustee of the Board of El Museo del Barrio. The terms "art visionary" and "mentor" were created to describe Gil.

His activist spirit inspired the formation of Consejo Gráfico to enhance the importance of printmaking as a visual tool for social justice. The printmaking workshop at Taller Boricua will always remember Gil Cárdenas.

Gracias por tanto, Gil. Your legacy and contributions will live forever.

Con profunda tristeza le comunicamos a toda nuestra familia extendida en las artes, que nuestra querida amiga, la Maestra ceramista Toni Hambleton a partido hoy 1 de Mayo, su luz infinita viaje hoy entre las estrellas y su huella nos deja un gran vacío difícil de ignorar…

Toni fue mucho más que una colaboradora, aliada y amiga del arte: fue inspiración. Su generosa y auténtica, presencia en las artes, marcaron una huella imborrable en nuestra comunidad. Hoy Toni descansa en Paz, pero su legado vivirá por siempre en nuestra memoria y en nuestros corazones

Toni Hambleton, fue una de las figuras más destacadas en el mundo de la cerámica contemporánea, con una trayectoria que abarcaba varias décadas de exploración artística con un enfoque innovador que marcó a generaciones de artistas y amantes del arte, su legado nos deja una huella profunda en la historia de las bellas artes de nuestro país, especialmente en la cerámica, donde su maestría ha sido reconocida internacionalmente.

Toni Hambleton nació con una sensibilidad única para el arte, cualidad que se manifestó en cada pieza de su creación. Su trabajo es un testimonio de la fusión entre tradición y modernidad. La cerámica, una disciplina que exige paciencia, técnica y un profundo entendimiento de los materiales, se convirtió en el medio perfecto para su obra. La delicadeza de sus formas y la profundidad de sus glaseados evocan una conexión visceral con la naturaleza, mientras que su innovación la posiciona como una de las voces más importantes del medio.

A lo largo de su carrera, Hambleton no solo se destacó por su destreza técnica, sino también por su compromiso con la evolución constante de su práctica.
