Working isn’t the problem. Working and still being unable to get ahead is.

For many Americans, a full-time paycheck has to compete with rent, groceries, healthcare, transportation, and every other monthly bill. And while average hourly earnings rose 3.1% over the past year, inflation continues to eat into purchasing power.

People aren’t necessarily asking for a life without work. They’re asking for work to actually provide a decent standard of living—some financial breathing room, stability, and a realistic path toward owning a home or building savings.

If working full-time still leaves someone one unexpected bill away from falling behind, is the problem really that people don’t want to work?

A paid-off home is supposed to represent security and stability. But property-tax delinquency can turn that security into a serious financial risk.

In Cook County alone, nearly 2,500 homeowners lost their properties and the equity they had built since 2020 after delinquent property taxes were sold. In most of those cases, the initial tax debt was $1,600 or less, while the homes were collectively worth more than $108 million.

That doesn't mean property taxes don't fund essential services. It means the system needs safeguards so a temporary financial hardship doesn't destroy decades of homeownership and accumulated wealth.

How can we call a home “paid off” if someone can still lose it because they can't keep up with the tax bill?
