Let's Send these Kids to School

Let's Send these Kids to School Breaking the chain of poverty by funding the educations of young orphaned Ugandan adults and teens WE ARE 6 years old and growing. The story does not end here.

OCTOBER 11, 2016
A basic education is something all of us take for granted. However, for many of the world's children this is a luxury. I was contacted last year by a young man, John Deng Akuai, from Uganda. The way that he found me is a relatively unimportant mystery. The important thing is he found the right person. He told me of his situation, losing a parent in the civil war in Sudan, finding

himself in a go-nowhere job as a house boy, and living in a refugee camp in the Arua district of Uganda. His biggest desire was to continue his education. This was something that could not be ignored! I contacted Gayle Kliever, a friend who created the GLKStudentFund which provides scholarships for children in Tanzania. She referred me to a priest from Uganda, Father Godwin Ogam. It seemed nothing short of miraculous that he visited John in Arua, oversaw his registration in school in Kampala, while on our end we were able to raise over $1,000 to ensure two terms of his schooling. This is only the beginning. The fulfillment in changing someone's life changed me. There are children out there whose strongest desire is to go to school. So this is where the story continues. In order to make a larger impact, I've decided to devote my time to the creation of a non-profit organization that can appear on a larger stage, garner more attention, receive corporate sponsorship. And this is where you come in. Not just monetary donations that are necessary to reach our goals, but I also ask for your words of encouragement and inspiration, your attention to this project that will, indeed, change the lives of many.

As we approach Christmas and the end of 2025, my mind is filled with thoughts of both the future and the past. Six journeys to Uganda over the past 10 years (I can honestly say) have deeply changed me. Things I’ve viewed in the past as problems have dimmed in the light of a people who have true challenges. Material objects don’t hold the same importance.

My decision to start Let’s Send these Kids to School was probably the best personal decision I ever made. Not only did it instill in me the joy of giving, it instilled in me a sense of discipline; a desire to stay healthy and vital to make this mission something that will last long after I depart this earthly plane.

If you have a few dollars to give, I have created a special Christmas gift campaign. The link is in the bio. Check it out. You’ll be glad you did!

Monday, December 1; later this evening, at the stroke of midnight, it will be GIVING TUESDAY, a global day of generosity. For those of us in the nonprofit world, it’s the grownup version of being a kid on Christmas morning. The anticipation of all good things, gifts, some surprises, spiritual and emotional support, is affecting my motivation today. (In a positive way of course!)

Once again we will have a matching grant from our friends at Dependable Service Plumbing & Air. So every dollar you donate will be matched up to $1000.

Keep your eyes open! I will make sure the online fundraiser is seen by everybody. We are supporting about 12 young Ugandan teens and adults, six of them university students, the others are in high school. Tuitions for spring are right around the corner.

Sitting to the left of me (my right) in the photo is our high school student, Olivia. I was invited to speak to her class in Masaka during my 2024 visit.
