A few members of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment recently marched off the beaten path and into the America 250 / Schuyler Farms 25! a-maize-ing Maze at Schuyler Farm in Schuylerville, NY.

No maps. No compass. No orderly retreat.

Just a whole lot of corn and a mission to find the way out! 😄

The maze is part of the America 250 celebration, and naturally, our members had to check it out. We came prepared with our usual historical knowledge, but apparently eighteenth-century military experience does not include navigating corn mazes.

Congratulations to our Secretary and Foodway Historian, Stacey Booth for offering an amazing program to the Nye Museum. Stacey spends many days a year interpreting with the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment.

Last night was an amazing evening with Foodways Historian Stacey Booth! Learning about New England Colonial Tavern Fare in the newly reinterpreted Nye Tavern room was a special treat for all attendees.

At the last moment, the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment was able to bring together two members to help with an important 9/11 remembrance ceremony at historic Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York.

The cemetery hosted a gala honoring the victims of 9/11 as well as the 50 Revolutionary War soldiers buried at Oakwood. Members of the regiment participated in the color guard, helping connect the memory of those lost on September 11 with the sacrifices of those who served during the American Revolution.

Among them was Michael Marchand, a member of the color guard who witnessed the events at Ground Zero on that fateful day. Michael shared that he was grateful to be able to participate in the ceremony in some way.

It was a meaningful day of remembrance, history, and service—honoring both the past and those whose lives were changed forever on 9/11.

The Reading Antiquarian is disappointed to announce that our event scheduled for Saturday 09/26 will postponed for a later date. The inclement forecast will make it impossible for us to safely host this event safely. We’d like to thank all our partners, our board, our members, and anyone else who has helped behind the scenes for this event. We look forward to seeing everyone at an encampment under better conditions on the future!

As living historians, we spend a lot of time asking one question:

What would it have been like to stand here?

That is one reason Walking Through Saratoga History is worth hearing.

Our Saratoga Section coordinator, Sean Kelleher, will take the Old Saratoga Historical Association beyond the familiar names and into the landscape, people, military decisions, and circumstances that shaped the Battles of Saratoga.

He will also look ahead to Saratoga 250 in 2026 and 2027 and the many opportunities for volunteers, living historians, historians, educators, and visitors to help bring this history to life.

From Hugh Maxwell and the eight Continental regiments to the young soldiers who filled the ranks, these are stories that remind us that history was lived by real people.

Back in April, members of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment had the opportunity to visit the Brunswick Historical Society in NY for a program on the American Revolution and the experience of the men and women who lived through it.

It was a great day of conversation, history, and sharing what living history can add to our understanding of the past.

We were pleased to see the Brunswick Historical Society mention the program in its newsletter. It is always rewarding to see these connections continue after the event itself.

Last week, several members of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment joined the Lake George Battlefield Alliance for a boat tour of the southern end of Lake George, exploring Revolutionary War sites and stories along the shoreline.

The highlight was Diamond Island, where the group learned about the 1777 Battle of Diamond Island, an often-overlooked episode of the northern campaign.

Seeing these places from the water offers a different perspective. The lake was not simply a backdrop to the Revolution. It was a military highway, a barrier, and a contested route connecting the Hudson Valley with the Champlain Valley.

For living historians, these visits are an important part of understanding the ground, waterways, and decisions that shaped the war.

History is not just something to know. It is something to experience.
