Narrative 4 is a global network of educators, students and artists who use art and storytelling to build empathy between people while equipping them to improve their communities and the world. Using our core methodology, the story exchange, we help students understand that their voices, stories, actions and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild or revolutionize systems.

"When you tell your story, nobody judges you." 💬

Last week, Brian Lally from Reignite (RTÉ Radio 1) visited Narrative 4 Ireland's summer camp in Limerick, designed to empower young migrant girls through the power of telling their own stories.

18 girls took part in a program of creative workshops, excursions and activities that encouraged personal growth, creativity and confidence. Through shared experiences, participants explored new interests, developed new skills and formed meaningful connections while creating lasting memories together. 💜

The future is being built right now by imaginative young people all over the world. They are out there on the scaffolding, changing the architecture of how we talk, where we place the windows and how we lead. 🌏💫

When we look at the headlines, it’s easy to believe that the cement has already hardened, the walls have narrowed and the doors are now closed. We disagree. There are rays of light breaking through everywhere.

Last year, more than 3,000 people participated in Story Exchanges on Marquette University's campus, while a new core curriculum class led by Dr. Leah Flack offered students across the university the chance to train as N4 facilitators and develop their skills as storytellers and leaders.

Marquette is ranked #1 nationally for community engagement, and N4 plays a key role in the university's outreach. Students have led civic engagement projects with vital community partners, including the pediatric oncology ward at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee.

Stories spark change. 🔥

Last month, students from St. Mary's Holy Faith Secondary School, Dublin and Loreto Milford Community School, Donegal came together to explore peacebuilding and collaboration through the power of storytelling.

Often, before a Story Exchange begins, there's a sense of excitement and apprehension. For many, the idea of sharing a personal story with a stranger is daunting - as is the responsibility of inhabiting somebody else's story as if it were one's own. But in the process of the exchange, nerves fall away, replaced by deep connection.

Through 4 Ireland's "Embers of Change" project, these young people found a space to express themselves with honesty.
An opportunity to connect.
An encounter with a different way of seeing the world.

“What is most personal, becomes most universal. And in the listening, we see each other more fully.” 💜

14 years ago, a group of world-renowned authors and activists came together, high in the Rocky Mountains, to explore what it would take to transform the world with stories. This gathering was the beginning of Narrative 4.

Earlier this year, acclaimed writer Terry Tempest Williams - one of N4’s founding artists - published The Glorians: Visitations from the Holy Ordinary (Grove Atlantic). To encounter the power of a Story Exchange through Terry’s eyes, as described above, is just one of many gifts in this powerful new work of narrative nonfiction.

Turning trash to treasure in Joe Slovo Township, South Africa 🌱

Earlier this week, Good Things Guy, South Africa’s top news website focused on good news, published a feature exploring Narrative 4's work in Joe Slovo Township. This informal settlement is home to more than 600 families. Since 2014, Narrative 4 has worked with the community to help address some of its most pressing challenges.

"Tell a story about being the only person in the room..."

This week, Narrative 4 UK had the privilege of bringing the Story Exchange to the Shifting Cultures Conference in Brighton.

Thirty incredible educators from multiple backgrounds stepped into the circle. They listened, shared, and left inspired to bring the power of story back to their classrooms. 🏫✨

The conference was attended by over 100 educators and is the first event of its kind in the UK bringing educators from across sectors to learn new teaching tools to support some of the most vulnerable students in the country.

A week of creative writing, storytelling, Tai Chi and art!

Narrative 4 Ireland delivered a week-long program for young migrant girls in Limerick city. It was a phenomenal week where stories were shared, friendship developed and the girls got to explore sites like King John’s Castle to inspire their creativity.
