Student Debt Crisis Center - SDCC

Student Debt Crisis Center - SDCC We are a people-powered movement representing over 2 million supporters. As of 2020, Americans owe more than $1.7 trillion in student debt.

SDCC is a nonprofit organization centering the needs and voices of borrowers, and partnering with allies, to impact public policy and end the student debt crisis. Our name reflects our commitment to addressing what we believe to be a colossal unfolding disaster: the ever-worsening problem of student loan debt. We fight hard on two fronts: one, working directly with borrowers to help them navigate

the bewildering and frustrating loan repayment system – and two, advocating for lasting and meaningful change through advocacy work and the lobbying of national and state legislators.

"After taxes, I take home less than $50,000 a year. At this salary, any increase to my student loan payment is noticeable and means my budget is tighter. The projected increase will mean I am worried every month about making ends meet." - Borrower from Pennsylvania

If education is required to succeed, affordability should come before repayment.

"I just heard that my payments are going to increase by $500! There is no way I can afford this! It’s so frustrating because I only have a few years left on my PSLF plan and now I will have to put my loans into forbearance." - Borrower from Oregon

We cannot talk about affordability without addressing the millions of Americans losing hundreds of dollars each month to student loans.

Education should be an investment societies make together -- not a burden individuals carry alone. Student debt is a systemic issue.

"The salaries that you are paid in these fields are many times not competitive and you do it for the love of humanity. To me, the government was telling us the people that we were a valued part of society. My family will be impacted and I will be personally impacted" - Borrower
