Friends Without A Border We are a non-profit organisation supporting Lao Friends Hospital for Children - Laos' only 100% FREE pediatric hospital. In 2013, AHC became independent.

We ensure all children receive quality healthcare regardless of ability to pay while building sustainable healthcare in Laos. In 1992, acclaimed photographer Kenro Izu traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to capture images of the Angkor Wat temple complex. While there, he noticed that many children in the area seemed ill and malnourished. He visited a nearby hospital and to his horror witnessed the death of a 7-year-old girl, who died because her father
could not afford $2 for the medicine that would have saved her. Kenro immediately decided to take action. He rallied friends and supporters and soon founded a nonprofit, Friends Without A Border. Despite having no connections or influence in Cambodia, Kenro’s nonprofit opened the Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in 1999, which was the first pediatric teaching hospital in Cambodia. In 2015, FWAB opened a second pediatric facility, Lao Friends
Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. It is the ONLY pediatric teaching hospital in the region and operates the area’s only neonatal unit and Milk Bank. About 45,000 children are treated at LFHC annually.

There's a bit of a friendly competition going on at Lao Friends Hospital for Children...
Team Child Life is one of the teams running while also raising funds for the Run For Children Virtual Race.

They are the only Child Life team in Northern Laos. Every day, they help our patients feel safe in the hospital. They explain procedures in ways a child can understand, stay close during scary moments, and use play, art, and music to bring a little normality while they are at the hospital
If you’ve ever worked with them, you know how hard-working they are.
Please cheer them on and show them some love.

🫶 Our organization was born from the vision of Mr. Kenro Izu, whose art led to the creation of equitable healthcare that has helped millions of children in Cambodia and Laos.

He had a vision, but more importantly, he brought many people together to make it happen.
Each adding their strength to build what Friends Without A Border is today.

We are very proud of the journey of our Founder and Honorary President, and sincerely thankful to all those who have helped and still help to make our work possible today.

More than three decades on, the need is growing, and so is our determination to meet it.

From photographing ancient temples to building children’s hospitals, Japanese photographer Kenro Izu turned one life-changing experience into a mission to provide free healthcare for children in Cambodia and Laos.

Happy Teachers’ Day!
YES! We have teachers in Lao Friends Hospital for Children!
Meet Teacher George, our Head of English Education, and Teacher Noon, our English Teaching Assistant. They support more than 200 Lao staff at the hospital so that they can have the opportunity to improve or learn English.

Learning English helps our staff access textbooks and up-to-date research, learn from international volunteers, communicate more confidently, and open new opportunities for professional development.

They may be a small team in the hospital, but their job is so important! Thank you, Teacher George and Teacher Noon; today is for you both! 💚

Our rainy season Emergency Appeal has EXCEEDED its goal.
We initially set out to raise $25,000 to support our Outreach team's work during the heavy rainy season. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, the campaign closed with $35,141 raised.

This means a lot...

The campaign is now closed, but the work continues. Our Outreach team is still traveling to remote communities across northern Laos to help children and families access healthcare.

We’ll be sharing an update soon on the team’s activities and will also communicate directly with our donors.

Thank you for making this work possible.

180 children seen in one day, at Lao Friends Hospital for Children Outpatient clinic.

For a hospital of LFHC’s size in northern Laos, that is an enormous number of children needing care.

These are families arriving with their child for outpatient care, emergency treatment, follow-up appointments and specialist clinics, all relying on the same hospital team, medicines, equipment and resources.

More children are coming through LFHC’s doors each year, placing greater pressure on services that remain completely free for families.

This is what your support makes possible.
The need is growing. So must our ability to respond. 💚

*UPDATE* Namthip is home. 💚
Recently, we told you the story of 12-year-old Namthip.
Not long ago, our Outreach Team traveled a long way over rough and muddy roads to reach her when she needed urgent care because her family was unable to bring her due to the road conditions and financial barriers.
We brought her to LFHC for treatment and surgery, and today she's discharged home and recovering fully.

This time, we'll let her tell you her story. 🎥

Thank you to LFHC's Outreach Team and everyone in the hospital who cared for her. Thank you to our donors who supported our Emergency Appeal and every supporter who makes our work possible. 🙏

From June to August 2026, during the height of the heavy rainy season, our Outreach team completed 173 home visits across some of the most remote and difficult-to-reach communities in northern Laos.

In just three months, the team traveled 10,554 km. Navigating flooded, muddy, and damaged roads to reach children and families who struggle to access healthcare.
During this difficult rainy season, the need for care does not stop; we continued, and we will continue, our work.

Your support helps us continue.

To everyone who has donated to our fundraising campaign so far, thank you. Your generosity helps keep our Outreach team on the road and reaching children, even during the most difficult months of the year.

We’re getting closer to our goal! 💚
So far, we’ve raised $18,791 through our GoFundMe campaign.

Thank you to everyone who has donated. We’ve been deeply touched by the generosity of both new and long-time supporters.

Right now, our Outreach team is out in remote communities reaching children who might otherwise have little or no access to healthcare.

That is possible because of you. 💚
Thank you for helping us keep going.

Can you help us reach our goal today?
