This week we’re shining a light on one of our amazing Jaycees making an impact in their community. Senator, Rodeo Chair, Role Model: Barry Johnson Does It All.
Member Spotlight: Barry Johnson – Sikeston Jaycees
Meet Barry Johnson, a longtime member of the Sikeston Jaycees who dedicated 25 years to the organization before receiving his Senatorship in 2004. He joined after seeing the real impact the Jaycees had on his community and wanted to be a part of continuing that tradition of service and leadership.
Why He Joined
“I saw how the Jaycees were making a difference, and I wanted to help out and keep that going in my own community.”
Favorite Projects
Barry’s favorites include the hayrides and car shows—but one of the highlights of his Jaycee career was serving as Chairman of the Rodeo in 2013. He also really enjoys the annual Crawfish Boils and the community spirit they bring.
Proudest Achievement
Becoming both a Jaycee Senator and Chairman stand out as two of Barry’s proudest accomplishments. “Receiving my Senatorship was honestly a shock. It’s the highest honor, and it meant a lot to me. I was amazed to see others recognize my work, and I try every day to be worthy of it—not just as a Senator, but as a father and a husband.”
How He’s Grown Through Jaycees
Personally, Barry says the Jaycees helped him break out of his shell and feel comfortable speaking and working with people. “It helped me understand the world around me better.”
Professionally, the organization gave him new outlooks on job opportunities and helped guide him toward a meaningful career path.
Who Inspired Him
Several individuals made a lasting impact on Barry’s Jaycee and Senator journey, including Gary Yant, Coup David Teachout, and Rob Clay. Their support, leadership, and example continue to inspire him.
