📍 WHEELS: Start with a Guided Ride/Walk at the Bike Zone (118th Street) with El Barrio Bikes or Transportation Alternatives . Get fitted for a free helmet or join a Learn-To-Ride session courtesy of NYC DOT . Then try out the Skateboard Zone (119th Street) with Bronx Girls Skate and Go Sports NYC !

📍 GO GREEN: Head to the Environment Zone at Urban Garden Center (111th Street) to install a new yarnbomb with Carmen Community Artist , then hop on the BioBus and DSNY Touch-A-Truck .

📍 KIDS / CIRCUS: At the Kids Zone (120th Street), Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will host shows at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. . Plus plenty of room to jump at two Bounce Zones (121st Street & 113th Street).

A return to Engine 35, Ladder 14, Battalion 12 today, to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11. There may be new development and scaffolding next door — but the station house marked the day, just like they always do.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Fred Scheffold and Joseph Marchbanks, Jr., were battalion chiefs at the firehouse on Third Avenue near East 124th Street. Both responded to the World Trade Center, and the south tower collapsed on top of them.

Each year since, the station has marked the anniversary by displaying the “WE WILL NOT FORGET” banner over the station, which in its original version hung over the World Trade Center site. Firefighters also take a trip upstate to visit with Scheffold’s and Marchbanks’ families, and attend the sunset memorial downtown.

In 2021, artist BLAZAY .ny painted portraits of Marchbanks and Scheffold as part of our Grandscale Mural Project, which you can see in the last slide. Both pieces now hang safely inside the station house, snug against the ladder truck.

Join us for our new recipe class series at the Uptown Farmstand at La Marqueta, where you’ll learn simple ways to use fresh summer and fall vegetables. Set for each Thursday this September from 4:30-5 p.m., every class will feature a recipe demo, tasting and take-home tips from Soul to Soil Wellness .

Save the date for Party On Park, when we’ll open the spaces under and along the Park Avenue Viaduct to walk, scoot, bike & more!

This year, we’ll be along Park Avenue from 125th to 111th streets, while the Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement Project wraps up its work.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 27, from 12-4 p.m. We’ll have a helmet giveaway thanks to NYC DOT , free codes to unlock the Citi Bikes , kids bikes to borrow from Unlimited Biking , skateboarding with Bronx Girls Skate , plus guided rides and walks thanks to Transportation Alternatives and El Barrio Bikes .

“Most days in East Harlem, a massive pile driver on Second Avenue slams into the ground, sending out thunderous bangs as workers build the city’s newest subway.

Businesses along the street are covered in scaffolding and fences, making it more difficult to attract customers. The construction worsens traffic in the area, which is one of Manhattan’s largest subway deserts.

It’s all part of a new way of life in the neighborhood that began earlier this year, when the MTA started heavy construction on its project to extend the Q line from East 96th Street to East 125th Street.

Many East Harlem neighbors and business owners said the short-term pain is worth the addition of a subway up Second Avenue, which has been promised for nearly a century. The new line aims to shave time off commutes and bring more commerce to Manhattan’s poorest neighborhood.

The construction is expected to last at least another five years, a timeline that highlights how hard it is to build a new subway in the country’s most densely populated city, below a neighborhood with more than 130,000 residents.”
