Why Accountability

Why Accountability We provide community empowerment because the NYPD is an inherently corrupt, racist institution. [email protected]

Why Accountability is a Black, female led grassroots community organization committed to the fight against police brutality and racial injustice since the chokehold death of Eric Garner. Why Accountability was founded by eight strangers in outrage and sustained indignation after the
chokehold death of Eric Garner captured video in July 2014. Since the video release, Why
Accountability has been suc

cessful in disrupting the NYPD safe space that is the Precinct Community
Council Meeting. We have attended over 40 Precinct Community Meetings throughout the Bronx
addressing the lack of balance between community input and police statistical reporting and other
propaganda. We have issued the following demands to the NYPD:

Precinct Commanders inform the public of the civilian complaints for that precinct on a monthly basis--without prompting. The Precinct Community meetings be held outside of the precinct house. All Precinct Community Council Meetings are Live-Streamed to the Public. That the Precinct Council Boards make a genuine effort in providing balance to the communities through continued outreach in order to get a fair representation within the Precinct meetings. Through our attendance at the precinct meetings Why Accountability has found that the Precinct Council Boards are complicit in maintaining the status-quo by supporting community residents who are pro-police. Always missing are constituencies most likely to experience police brutality: Black and
Hispanic youth, apartment dwellers, formerly incarcerated and working class Bronxites. Why Accountability is also documented on public record with exposing the Civilian Complaint Review
Board's (CCRB) lack of transparency and hypocrisy. We are also credited on record for changing the statistical reporting matrix of the Board. Our efforts are ongoing and we have made informed the CCRB of the demand listed above. Why Accountability further demands:

1. The immediate arrest and indictment of NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the murder of Eric
Garner

2. The immediate firing of NYPD Commissioner William Bratton

3. The immediate end of Broken Windows Policing and other racially disparate NYPD policies
including formal and informal arrest and summons quotas

4. CCRB APU Trials are not held at 1 Police Plaza

5. The reparation of uncompensated labor (and other racist policies i.e. Jim Crow, Redlining)
performed by the Afrikan chattel slave in the United States by the United States to the
descendants of chattel slavery (and other racist policies)

Please join us for our General Meetings at the Bronx Social Center- 970 Prospect Ave BX, NY beginning February 15, 2016. (2,5 Train to Prospect Ave or BX6 to 163rd and Prospect)

In the bi-monthly General Meetings Why Accountability will inform the community about the
dynamics of the Precinct Community Council Meetings, how to effectively participate and take
control of the meetings as well as any additional services and tools the community needs in
keeping with our purpose. We would also seek to unite and strengthen grassroots community groups in the Bronx and the city at large. The general meeting is also a gathering place to announce, plan and respond to any incident of police brutality in the Bronx.
