We had an amazing STEAM Day this past Saturday at Westfield Fun Club. The morning was filled with hands-on learning and tons of fun as we explored Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math through a variety of engaging activities led by wonderful community partners and volunteers.
With the help of Exploratores Westfield (https://exploratores.com) kids built and test-drove their own balloon-powered cars. Founder Iskra guided them through each step, sparking curiosity and excitement. Over at the Technology station, the Westfield High School Robotics Team wowed everyone with a robot demo and the kids even got to control the robot themselves!
At the Science table, Amanda, a scientist from Johnson & Johnson, led a fantastic DNA activity. She explained how DNA works - like a recipe book that tells our bodies how to grow and stay healthy , and the kids built their own DNA models using Twizzlers and gummy bears.
The fun didn’t stop there! Kids tackled brain-teasing puzzles at the Math table, explored the tiny world of insects through a microscope, and got creative at the Art station making solar system necklaces and assembling their own orbiting-planet mobiles. Thanks to generous donations from the Westfield Library, every child also got to choose STEAM-themed books to take home and keep.
Adding to the excitement, Master Lego Champion Corey (https://www.instagram.com/samzbrego/), who teaches LEGO STEAM programs at Westfield Recreation, led a thrilling Lego car–building challenge where kids designed vehicles and raced them head-to-head.
Each child left with a goodie bag filled with their creations plus a tangram puzzle, a coding activity book, and a Rubik’s cube - tools to continue building their STEAM skills at home. It was a day full of discovery, creativity, and smiles and an inspiring celebration of the power of STEAM learning!
Special thanks for Candida Lafeta for organizing all the events!
