(Florida State Univ. & SUNY Stony Brook, 2014), HCS Class of 2006, Presently working with the MTA as Reliability & Maintenance Engineer ~Founded in June, of 2000 by Dr. Sat Bhattacharya, Harlem Children Society (HCS; www.hcs2k.org) is dedicated to promoting & evolving an innovative, high-end, one-on-one, hands-on scientific research programs in bio/medicine, engineering, technology, & allied fields. HCS tracks and performs a longitudinal study of all its participants. One hundred percent of the students who have gone through HCS programs have either graduated from University/ College, or are still at various stages of study in the campuses nationwide. Over 80% of the students have maintained a relationship with the sciences. We therefore firmly believe that HCS has not only been a leveler in the playing field for needy students, but also of their families and communities that HCS serves, making them an Asset for their families, Community, New York and Country as a whole.Over, fifteen years, We have experimented with the idea of using and adapting "Skills-based Training & Education" as a tool - primarily in Science & Technology & Allied Sciences, evolving a hands-on, research- & inquisitive- based approach to this process - whereby the disenfranchised, under-resourced & under-served communities implement change in their local economies. This process takes place at the high school (and middle school levels) – and continuing through University - involving their communities. We follow our students and keep them engaged in the process though their university life & career. This process of engagement has over fifteen years - begun to show some positive outcomes - at not only increasing the intellectual & inquisitive capacity in our younger friends, but has had a direct impact on alleviating poverty and destitution - by leveraging their skills, and creating a cadre of enlightened souls - whose objective is not just to serve themselves, but also contribute to their immediate environment, even in their early stages of growth. We have modified this approach in rural areas & other far-away areas across the country & globe - innovating, developing & adapting such programs to suit local needs of populations - be it the distant Native lands of the Hopi Indians in Arizona, deserts of Ethiopia, the jungles in Kenya, the Marsh-lands in the Sunderbans, and many others. Now in its 15th year, since the program was founded the program in Dr. Sat Bhattacharya’s laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with just three students from two high schools (who since are at Engineering, MD/PhD, and other professional programs) doing research in my laboratory, the highly regarded national and globally recognized program, has expanded this year involving over 1500 mentors, 200 partner institutions, and over 400 students from 200 schools. Among other developmental activities and training, the students perform one-on-one hands-on science research in myriad of fields in science, technology, math & engineering with accomplished mentors in leading universities, hospitals, and research centers like Cornell. Columbia, MSKCC, CUNY, SUNY, NASA, and others. In a time when people are losing interest in science, engineering, and technology careers, the HCS hopes to revitalize these fields with some of our most gifted youth from such communities. Over 3,000 students have gone through our programs and we have been following all our students since inception. One hundred percent of our students have continued their higher education at leading institutions of higher learning - with 80% still taking sciences and over 20% in Ivy League institutions.~Harlem Children Society Missionwww.harlemchildrensociety.org* Develop innovative curricula to be used in under- resourced school districts in low-income Communities* Build a corps of researchers and other Science and medical practitioners to serve as positive Role models and mentors* Provide training and insight for mentors and learners so that long term changes will be Effected in schools* Promote other activities related to scientific education for the enhancement of the Community at large For Information Contact: Dr. Sat Bhattacharya, Founder, President & CEO, Harlem Children Society Tel: (646) 643-8563; (646) 633-4645/4655 Email: [email protected]; URL: www.harlemchildrensociety.orgSigma Xi, The Scientific Research Societywww.sigmaxi.orgThe 150 year old Rockefeller University Chapter of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society comprises of over 200 Nobel Laureates and over 65, 000 scientists, engineers and doctors.Dr. Sat Bhattacharya serves as the President of the Rockefeller University Chapter of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research SocietyAssociation of Science & Societywww.AScienceSociety.orgAssociation of Science & Society (AS&S) founded by Dr. Bhattacharya was Dedicated and Inaugurated on 24 March 2011 in Kolkata, India. The Goal of AS&S is to Promote and advance Science & Technology and creating a Universal Awareness of Tolerance and Peace. It seeks to promote Awareness in the sciences and technology especially in the under-reserved and under-resourced communities of the world and to promote Tolerance of all Faiths and striving for Universal Peace and Human-hood. Promotion of education, of constant progress, and a heart and mind that never ages – is a major focus – seeking to bridge the realizations from the Past, Present, and Future.
