TreePEP (Tree Pit Enlargement Project)

TreePEP (Tree Pit Enlargement Project) Contact [email protected]. Parks Dept's recommended contractor for tree pit enlargement/tree bed expansion and sidewalk repair.

Street trees are subject to numerous stresses and many die each year. Among these are restricted root growth and insufficient water absorption resulting from inadequate, compacted pits. Enlarging pits/beds enables roots to expand and absorb more water. Storm water redirected into tree pits also reduces sewer overflow which helps alleviate the pollution of New York’s waterways. The Green Sidewalks of St Petersburg, Florida:
This low-lying city is vulnerable to flooding. Instead of unnecessary concrete, the sidewalks are green and permeable, lined with plants, shrubs and trees everywhere, including on busy commercial streets.

TreePEP's founder recently spoke at a workshop about flood mitigation strategies. She explained the importance of eliminating sidewalk concrete, in addition to other strategies, to help reduce flooding and create better living conditions for street trees. Many of the workshop attendees weren't aware that homeowners are legally permitted to remove sidewalk concrete. Upon learning this, one of the attendees and several of her neighbors hired TreePEP to remove concrete on their properties. Approximately 135 square feet of concrete was removed.

Trivia ?: How many miles of sidewalk concrete cover NYC?

BREAKING GROUND ON GROUNDBREAKING PROJECT!
TreePEP, in collaboration with Park Slope's 5th Ave BID, has created Park Slope's first Greenway on a commercial street. The 33' long Greenway will host 2 trees and 2 native pollinator gardens.

Concrete contributions to the heat island effect, raising temperatures in the city. Removing concrete is a local response to climate change's devastating consequences that has a demonstrable impact on city temperatures.

Across the street from the Greenway, TreePEP also enlarged 3 existing tree pits.

Molecules awoke one morning to find that atoms were inside them, enfolded in their very being. Cells awoke one morning to find that molecules were actually inside them, as part of their being. And you might awake one morning and find that nature is a part of you, literally internal to your being. You would then treat nature as you would your lungs or kidneys.

Enlarging Tree Pits Helps Lower City Temperatures

NOVA's Weathering the Future addresses the devastating weather events we're having as a result of Climate Change. Among the issues presented is the problem of increasing urban summer temperatures and the contributing role of sidewalk concrete-- and the solution--- Removing concrete and replacing it with soil, to help lower temperatures.

Americans use ancient wisdom and new technology to fight extreme weather.
