Today’s New New Yorkers Printmaking Workshop at the Queens Museum brought together a vibrant group of participants eager to explore the creative possibilities of printmaking. Guided by Teaching Artist Grethell Rasúa, the workshop offered an open, welcoming environment where adults of all backgrounds—many of them immigrants and multilingual New Yorkers—could experiment, learn, and express themselves through hands‑on techniques. The New New Yorkers program is designed to support immigrant communities by providing accessible, bilingual art education, and today’s session reflected that mission beautifully.
Printmaking, with its layers, textures, and surprises, becomes a metaphor for the immigrant experience itself: building, revising, adapting, and discovering new forms of expression. Under Grethell Rasúa’s guidance, today’s group transformed simple materials into powerful visual statements, each print reflecting a unique voice within a shared creative space.
The Queens Museum’s commitment to community engagement shines through the New New Yorkers program, offering opportunities for artistic growth, cultural exchange, and personal empowerment. Today’s workshop is one more example of how art can bring people together, spark imagination, and open pathways for self‑expression.

The printmaking workshops are becoming an open studio. Lately, we have welcomed new
participants. By the end of the session, everyone left with a print to take home and be proud
of. We kept exploring Monotype, a versatile technique. In January, we dedicated the session
to drawing and printing by hand. In February, we explored Direct Painting, which added a
slight difficulty to the process. We dampened the paper and used the printing press. Our
instructor was so proud of the teamwork and the fabulous prints.
We were inspired by German Expressionism and took a closer look at Ernst Ludwig
Kirchner's work, whose vivid palette influenced our prints.
As we were so excited to explore this technique further, Michelle decided to extend the
experience to the next session. She encouraged us to bring any image that we liked to use
as inspiration for the March session—the more colorful, the better!

On Sunday November 26, the Linocut Enthusiasts group gathered in the Studio B, for our third session. After the Thanksgiving Holiday we had a small group but felt very cozy. Everyone kept working on their Linoleum plates. It seemed like all of us had something else to add to our images. It was easier to carve because we all had “Bench Hooks” thanks to a generous donation from our loyal participants and friends: Veronica and Jaime. Everyone noticed the difference when carving using the bench hook. Much more easier and Safer.

We also noticed that if we carve with Linoleum cutters well sharped, the effort is less and the lines look crispier and cleaner.

For the second part of the class, Our instructor showed us how to ink the plate and print using the Printing Press. We all had the opportunity to do it and our first prints came out well. In some cases we just need to control de amount of ink we use.

Happy Printing!
See you in December.
