Celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene Day in Mokhada's Tribal Villages
This World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Gabriel Project Mumbai together with Grameen First Development Foundation held two special community workshops in the tribal villages of Sonarvadi and Sadakwadi, reaching approximately 70 women and adolescent girls.
The workshops run by our Parivartan (Behaviour Change) Team focused on practical and essential topics, including overall menstrual hygiene, the safe and proper use of sanitary pads, menstrual health awareness, and reducing stigma around menstruation. As part of the program, GPM also distributed reusable sanitary pads to all participants, helping ensure that women and girls have access to safe, dignified, and sustainable menstrual hygiene options.
Across rural India, menstrual health remains a serious challenge.
According to NFHS-5 data highlighted by UNFPA, while progress has been made, many adolescent girls still lack access to hygienic menstrual protection, and usage is often lower in rural and marginalized communities. Nationally, about 22% of adolescent girls don’t use a hygienic method of protection, meaning that millions face barriers to safe menstrual health.
We are especially grateful to our partners, including for Humans For Humanity and Jalpa H Vithalani of Cosmic Heart Foundation, who generously donated 700 sanitary pad kits.
Our team will distribute these kits throughout the month of June, expanding menstrual health support to more women and girls across the communities we serve.
Through education, access, and open conversation, GPM is helping women and girls manage menstruation with greater confidence, safety, and dignity.
