In 1935, Doris Duke set out on a honeymoon that would change the course of her life.
Traveling across North Africa, West Asia and South Asia, she didn’t just collect. She commissioned work and engaged with artists and artisans whose knowledge, techniques and materials shaped elements of Shangri La, from tilework to carved wood and architectural design.
Over decades, those exchanges became part of the home itself.
Today, that spirit continues. Shangri La remains a place for learning, dialogue and exchange, bringing local and global perspectives into conversation.
