Can we disagree without falling apart?

On a hot August evening, twelve people gathered at Queens Public Library’s Ridgewood branch with copies of Robert Frost’s “Mending Wall.” They began with two neighbors, a stone wall, and a disagreement that returns each spring.

As participants followed the poem into questions about their own lives and communities, they found that a shared text could hold different interpretations without forcing a quick resolution.

It's an old question, but one every generation inherits.

On Thursday, August 6, join Humanities New York and Queens Public Library for Can We Disagree Without Falling Apart?, the first conversation in The Future of Democracy: Conflict, Disagreement, and Civic Life.
