Last October, Kristen Alfano’s life changed unexpectedly: her stepdad was diagnosed with ALS. From the moment he came into Kristen’s life, he showed up generously and without hesitation, as a guiding presence for her and a loving partner to her mother. Running the NYC marathon on Team Target ALS is how Kristen is showing up for him.

Reckoning with this diagnosis has reshaped how Kristen looks at life. It’s a reminder of what truly matters, that health is the greatest form of wealth, and the importance of being there for the people you love.

Kristen refuses to let her grief consume her. She’s channeling it into something meaningful. Meet Alex Shapos, a second-time Team Target ALS member, who is once again taking on 26.2 miles in memory of his father. Alex was just three weeks old when his dad was diagnosed with ALS, and he passed away just three years later.

Alex’s dad noticed his first ALS symptom on a run, when his foot started to feel funny. Now, Alex is bringing the story full circle, raising awareness and funds for ALS research so no family has to have this same experience. And as a new dad, this mission is more important than ever.

We are saddened to share the passing of Pat Dolan. After receiving his ALS diagnosis in 2016, Pat leaned in. He learned about the struggles others in the ALS community were facing and was determined to make a difference. Leveraging his professional expertise in data and mapping, Pat launched GeoALS to improve care and accelerate research. His compassion for those around him paired with his resilience in the face of his own fight led to the creation of incredible resources that will continue to improve the lives of those with ALS well into the future.

This year has been incredibly heartbreaking for the ALS community. This disease continues to take vivacious, passionate, brilliant people from us. It can feel like a never-ending battle. And while we must grieve, we must also fight back.

We believe that ALS is a tractable disease. We believe that we will find effective treatments that stop it in its insidious tracks. We believe in a world where everyone with ALS lives. We implore you to believe alongside us.

Our hearts are with Pat’s family and friends and with everyone who feels heavy with the pain of this loss. His legacy will live on in those he loved, what he built, and the fight that we will now carry forward in his name.

Last week, we launched our ALS Resource Center, a dedicated space for the ALS community and those interested in the fight against ALS to learn more about the disease and better understand what’s happening in ALS research. From outlining the first steps to take when navigating a diagnosis to breaking down technical scientific terms, this space is for you.

Let’s get started with a few quick stats:

🧬 90% of ALS cases are sporadic, which means there is no family history of the disease.
🕜 The average life expectancy after an ALS diagnosis is just 2-5 years.
💵 Target ALS has invested more than $80 million into ALS research across our fund-enable-conduct model, and counting.

We are thrilled to announce that the first participant at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has been enrolled in the Target ALS Global Natural History Study (GNHS)!

"Representing a unique, multi-ethnic Southeast Asian cohort, our patient population offers crucial insights into diverse genetic backgrounds and clinical phenotypes. Participating in GNHS allows us to better understand how ALS manifests across underrepresented populations and accelerates our global effort toward tailored therapies, " shares the research team in Malaysia, led by Dr. Nortina Shahrizaila.

We still have a lot to learn about ALS, and we need to look at every piece of the puzzle to see the complete picture. We launched the GNHS to create the most comprehensive and inclusive collection of data and samples in ALS research. Participants visit our global sites over time to provide biofluid samples and complete assessments that will help researchers identify new biomarkers and drug targets for ALS.

To build a world where everyone lives, we have to study everyone. Learn more about the GNHS and how to participate at www.targetals.org/gnhs.

Today, we mourn the loss of Brooke Eby. Brooke was a powerhouse. Witty, clever, joyful, and direct. She was unwilling to be silenced by ALS. To take a fatal diagnosis at 33 and find humor in it, and through that humor find an opportunity to reach people, is a special thing that only Brooke could pull off.

We at Target ALS are angry. Angry that, once again, this disease has taken someone who gave so much to the world. Angry that we will no longer have this sharp-tongued, beautiful, remarkable person who refused to hide away from this disease. Brooke's passing is a stark reminder that ALS is relentless and we can't take time for granted. We must continue to push the boundaries and approach ALS research with urgency. We must make our vision of a world where everyone lives a reality. Enough is enough.

But we are also grateful. Grateful that Brooke gave so much of herself to this fight. Whether she was rallying her community and raising money for ALS organizations, taking us inside the life of someone living with ALS, or starting a peer-to-peer network to help people with ALS and their caregivers better navigate this disease, she poured herself into this cause.

Our hearts go out to her parents, her family and friends, and all those who knew her, loved her, or followed her. We will miss Brooke and are deeply grateful for everything she gave to this community.

Several years ago, Brooke shared her story with Target ALS. We invite you to revisit it and learn more about the extraordinary person she was: https://targetals.org/news/hope-in-action-how-brooke-eby-is-using-her-voiceand-her-humor-to-fuel-als-research/

One mission. 26.2 miles. A lifetime dedicated to ALS.

This November, Dr. Nazem Atassi will take on the 2026 NYC Marathon with Team Target ALS, running to raise awareness and support for a community that has shaped his life's work.

As an ALS physician and drug developer, Nazem has spent his career alongside people living with ALS and their families. From caring for patients at Massachusetts General Hospital to advancing ALS drug development at Biogen, Sanofi, and now Novartis, one goal has remained constant: to help bring better treatments to people living with ALS.

Running has become another way to carry that mission forward. On training runs through Boston and Cambridge, Nazem proudly wears his ALS shirts, often receiving thumbs-up and encouragement from strangers who recognize the cause.

In November, those training miles will lead to the streets of New York.

26.2 miles. One step at a time. For every person living with ALS, every family affected, and everyone working toward a future where Everyone with ALS Lives.

We understand that an ALS diagnosis often comes with more questions than answers. Where do you start? What do the latest research breakthroughs actually mean? How do clinical trials work, and is one right for you?

That's why we created the ALS Resource Center: a hub of expert-informed guidance, written with the ALS community in mind.

Inside, you'll find three core sections:

🧭 Navigating a Diagnosis
🔬 Understanding Clinical Trials
📚 Understanding ALS Research

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore are now part of our Global Natural History Study (GNHS), led at each site by: Dr. Vishnu V. Venugopalan, AIIMS and Dr. Nalini Atchayaram, NIMHANS.

The GNHS is one of the most comprehensive and diverse ALS data and biosample collection efforts in existence. Adding these two leading institutions expands its reach and brings us closer to understanding ALS across the full diversity of people it affects.

In case you missed it live, the full recording of our webinar, "Understanding Clinical Trials: A Guide for the ALS Community," is now available to watch.

Dr. Toby Ferguson and Dr. Thos Cochrane joined Target ALS's Stephanie Ishoo to break down how ALS drugs move from the lab to clinical trials. The conversation covers what makes a drug ready to enter a clinical trial, the different phases of a trial and what each one tests, how to interpret primary and secondary endpoints, and much more.

Whether you're living with ALS, caring for someone who is, or simply want to better understand the research process, this session is a valuable resource.

The recording lives in our new Webinar Library, a home for all of our past sessions. Watch the playback and explore previous webinars here: https://ow.ly/AOcn50ZSs5N
