Enhancing safety for those on the front lines of aid

UNMAS Iraq recently hosted an in-person explosive ordnance information session in Erbil for NGO workers and UN employees.

With the shifting threat landscape, this session introduced safety tips on a vital new element: one-way attack drones.

Alongside our traditional safety presentations, participants took part in an hands-on VR interactive experience to safely simulate hazard identification in real-time.
Equipping humanitarian workers with the tools and knowledge to stay safe while delivering life-saving aid.

🇳🇬✨UNMAS at the frontline of Explosive Ordnance Awareness for all UN staff 🇺🇳

In April 2026, UNMAS Nigeria successfully concluded a series of Explosive Ordnance Awareness sessions for UNICEF field staff across Kaduna, Sokoto, and Kano States. ⚠️

Amid rising EO threats in northwest Nigeria, these sessions equipped UN personnel – particularly field staff – with life-saving knowledge. From recognizing explosive hazards and identifying dangerous areas to interpreting ground signs and adopting , participants gained both essential theory and hands-on practical skills 💡. A total of 47 UNICEF personnel (9 female, 38 male) took part in this awareness session. 👥

🌍🤝In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, UNMAS Nigeria partnered with the Nigerian Police Force to deliver EOA sessions featuring realistic field simulations, enhancing real-world . As one of the first response forces in the BAY region, security officers knowledge and capacity to lead EOA is essential at keeping communities safe.

UNMAS promotes Mine Action Awareness for its own , as humanitarian and development workers are also exposed forefront to the threats of explosive ordnance which are non-discriminatory . UNMAS is proud of its with UNICEF Nigeria in enhancing the safety of each one. 💙
🙏✨We thank our donors 🇺🇸, and close partner UNICEF Nigeria for their continued support, supporting the large UN community.

We also thank UKaid 🇬🇧 and the Government of Japan 🇯🇵 for making it possible to strengthen the EOD capacities of security personnel for the benefit of the humanitarian community and the wider population in Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.

Today is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, a reminder that investing in peace is a shared responsibility.

When peace breaks down, people everywhere feel the consequences. Without continued investment, progress and stability can be lost.

Peace does not happen by accident. It requires political will, sustained financing, and collective commitment.

Now is the time to , not war. Everywhere. For everyone.
