Our Mission

My name is Mary Rinaldo Hansen. I am the founder of the Julianna Rose Children’s Foundation. In June 2001 my husband Jeff and I happily welcomed our first child, a beautiful baby girl, Julianna Rose and in May 2002, after almost a year of unanswered questions and concerns about her development, we received confirmation that our beautiful, happy, bundle of joy, in fact had suffered a left and middle cerebral arterial infarction – a stroke, either before, during or sometime after birth into the first few weeks of life, and the cause of her with hemiplegia cerebral palsy and early childhood seizures and global learning deficits. Established in 2006, Julianna Rose Children’s Foundation was very small family-run, self-funded, community based grassroots organization whose mission was simple; to raise awareness, advocate and educate about pediatric stroke, brain injury and cerebral palsy, causes, effects and co-occurring conditions, and to provide and offer support to other families of pediatric stroke and all brain injury survivors, regardless of cause or effects. Over the years, as Julianna continued to grow and her needs and experiences changed, so did our mission; our awareness campaigns evolved to include mental health, su***de prevention, community recreational inclusion advocacy, accessibility and our BeAFriendMakeAFriend StandUpToStandOut BeALeader PossibilityOfPossible and iCantYet campaigns Every event and experience, from Julianna’s birth to diagnosis, doctor appointments, evaluations, therapies and academic and social challenges, combined with thousands of stories shared from other children and their families, therapists and doctors, was and continues to be the inspiration and driving force behind why we established the Julianna Rose Children’s Foundation, with an ever-evolving mission, a mission that always included a much bigger idea for the future, an idea so big, so easily and clearly formed in our own heads, that we knew one day we would make it our life’s mission. THAT TIME HAS COME – Our awareness and advocacy efforts have already made an impact to countless children and families, however, just as the needs of non-disabled children change as they grow, so do the needs of children with disabilities and by extension, so does our mission, which now actively includes one of our very first original ideas for JRCF’s future; Redefine what pediatric therapy means what it should include and create the next generation of physical and recreational therapy centers for children with disabilities, regardless of a family’s ability to pay or insurance status. We realize and appreciate that our idea was and still is bigger than we ourselves are and to accomplish it, and accomplish it we will, we can no longer continue as self-funded. We will need to ask for and rely heavily on the generous support of others, not just through monetary donations, which we’ll happily accept, but also donations of equipment, technology, adaptive devices, your time and expertise in whatever field you may be in, to help us in supporting our ever-evolving mission to support the ever-evolving needs of children with disabilities, regardless of type and cause. To that end, in January 2018, we applied for recognized 501c3 public charitable organization status, because we know we are going to need all the help we can get. In March 2018, we received our official 501c3 designation letter with an exemption status date effective February 12, 2018, verification of which, until the IRS updates its online verification database, can be done directly with the IRS at 877-829-5500 EIN #205715834 Our Mission - Summary Our bigger idea, simply, change the current model of pediatric therapy services, re-define what pediatric therapy means and includes by creating the next generation of pediatric physical therapy centers because we know, in addition to all currently recognized medical theapies, they should also include all forms of recreational therapies, sports, the arts, music, academic support, employment and mental health services, and be available in local communities and under one roof, regardless if they are medically prescribed or insurance approved, which is about 80% of these services. We’re creating local-community-based, state-of-the-art, full service and inclusive, physical and recreational therapy centers for children with disabilities, that start-and-stay with each child to help Raise-Them-Up from diagnosis to college age and beyond, will: · Provide community-based access to all medically recognized pediatric therapies, utilizing basic and latest state-of-the-art equipment and adaptive technologies available, for all children with disabilities, both permanent and temporary, regardless of type or cause · Provide access and opportunity in inclusive adaptive sports, arts, music, dance, camp, STEM, and full academic support services through college age · Provide scholarships and financial assistance for children with permanent disabilities · Provide medical and mental health screenings and support including su***de prevention · Provide continuity of services and programs from time of child’s diagnosis through college-age and beyond · Provide adaptive learning and medical devices and equipment to children to achieve independence · Provide mentors and academic-to-career programs to help kids know all the possibilities that exist, especially in fields that remain unrepresented and under-represented by people with disabilities and help make whatever college and career path they choose, possible! · Become a source of training and eventual employment as jrcfKIDS grow up, ensuring JRCF always has disability community representation · Become premier pediatric post-surgical therapy centers including for children who receive surgical services in out-of-state hospitals Now the hard part · Provide all our services and programs regardless of a family’s ability to pay or insurance status. No child will ever be turned away or receive a bill for programs, medical or recreational therapies or any service or program we provide.
