New York City Police Foundation The Foundation does not purchase weapons (military or other) or ammunition of any kind for the police department.

The New York City Police Foundation's mission is to provide resources for the NYPD to innovate and improve the quality of its services; build bridges with the community; and make NYC a safer place to live, work, and visit. For fifty years, the New York City Police Foundation has helped to advance programs to prevent violent crime, thwart terrorism, and safeguard the people of our city; strengthen relationships between the NYPD and community members to improve public safety through Neighborhood Policing; engage youth across the five boroughs through leadership training and career development; enhance training and wellness across the NYPD; and pilot new technologies, and provide resources and services to protect the public and the police.

When financial challenges threatened the NYPD Mounted Unit in the 1970s, the New York City Police Foundation stepped in. For the next 20 years, the Foundation donated the horses that helped keep the iconic “10-Foot Cop” on patrol.

Today, Mounted Unit officers remain a familiar presence in our parks, at parades, and in our communities. They also play a role in counterterrorism.

The New York City Police Foundation proudly salutes NYPD Sergeant Ruben Cespedes, who was recently awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while serving with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Cespedes’ distinguished career spans both the U.S. military and the NYPD, where he has also been recognized with the Department’s Medal for Valor.

Twenty-five years later, the courage, sacrifice, and loss of September 11, 2001, remain forever etched in the heart of New York City and our nation.

The New York City Police Foundation remembers the 2,977 lives lost that day—including 23 members of the NYPD—and honors the officers, firefighters, and first responders who ran toward the danger. Tragically, the losses did not end on 9/11, as we honor the 469 NYPD heroes and all those who have since lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses.

The New York City Police Foundation joins the NYPD in mourning the tragic passing of Probationary Police Officer Kamir Loubarria, who died after a medical emergency during training at the Police Academy.

Officer Loubarria chose a life of service and was preparing to dedicate his career to protecting New Yorkers. Our deepest condolences are with his family, loved ones, fellow recruits, and the entire NYPD during this heartbreaking time.
