Center For Artistic Activism

Center For Artistic Activism We aim to win. We believe there is an art to activism. We believe that activism is too often flat and colorless…and it doesn’t need to be.

We believe an aesthetic eye and a creative hand are essential for building a better world. We believe that everyone has an artistic life they can bring to their activism. We believe that cultural transformation is necessary for lasting change. We believe in Utopia, not as a destination but as a direction.

From our Case Studies in "How Progressive Movements Are Using Values-Aligned AI," Debunkbot is an AI tool that has the conversation you’ve been dreading with your uncle at Thanksgiving. The one about whatever conspiracy theory he’s onto now and all the details, unhinged arguments, gish-galloping – all wrapped up in a slightly antisemitic subtext. But Debunkbot knows *all the things*, can engage in every claim, stays polite and considerate, and never loses patience. In a published MIT study, just three back-and-forth exchanges with the AI produced a 20% average reduction in the strength of people’s conspiracy beliefs – and the effect held for at least two months.

Feel free to pause here and forward this link to your uncle now: https://hubs.li/Q047qrkc0

We don't do free workshops often. On March 25th at 8pm ET, Vivian Peng and Steve Lambert are walking through the process we use with activists and artists around the world to build strong campaign objectives. You'll leave with something written and usable. Come through — it's free.

It was a typical Council meeting - until Batman showed up.

The Super Bowl was being held in Santa Clara and Batman was obviously concerned about the *other* masked vigilantes in town: ICE.

Millions watched the video because of the outfit, but stuck around because of his deeply impassioned, authentic speech. Watch it and you’ll feel it too.

“ Hope is not optimism. Hope is in the darkness.” in our recent workshop on Forging Anti-Fascist Futures, shared how Rebecca Solnit’s Hope in the Dark has kept him going - even as a peace activist working with .global in Tel Aviv, where imagining positive futures feels nearly impossible. This book has been on the Center for Artistic Activism‘s reading list since day one. It’s essential. Wanna join the next workshop? Sign up for our newsletter. (Link in bioooooooo)

Overwhelm and isolation aren’t just feelings—they’re strategies used to keep people powerless. But we know the antidote: joy and togetherness. 💛

At the Center for Artistic Activism, we call it the Ministry of Love—a reminder that connection, care, and celebration make our movements stronger. Whether it’s a Sunshine Committee, a check-in call, or just making meetings more fun, these small acts keep us motivated and unstoppable.

How do you bring joy into your organizing?

Check out our latest post from Center for Artistic Activism’s Co-Founder and Artistic Director Steve Lambert on the importance of joy and tips to bring it into your advocacy! Head over to c4aa.org/big-news

Are you a political ju**ie? We are too! But not everyone loves to talk about politics and voting. So we’ve found that offering another type of activity, like a bar hang or a comedy show or a concert, and then working civic engagement content into that, can be a much more effective method of engagement. Musician Eljuri has been doing that across the country this year, using song to connect with Spanish-speaking voters in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and New York. In partnership with us, People for the American Way Foundation, Headcount, and more.

Is the Met Gala’s moneyed spectacle completely at odds with activism, or can we leverage it to build more successful advocacy campaigns?

The C4AA has withdrawn from Facebook.

We use Facebook to connect with you, and you use Facebook to connect with us. But it’s not working. Facebook was never our preferred way, but it’s where over 4000 of you have chosen to stay informed about what we do at the Center for Artistic Activism. Part of our philosophy at the C4AA is to meet people where they are, and, undeniably, hundreds of millions of people (and some bots) are on Facebook. However, looking at the statistics provided by Facebook, we’ve come to realize that the connection we were after isn’t actually made. You wouldn’t realize because you don’t know what’s kept from you. (In fact, statistically, you’re probably not reading this on Facebook.)

We currently have 4,093 “fans” for our page on Facebook. For a scrappy organization focused on artistic activism, that’s not bad (especially since we never bought bots to boost our numbers). Those thousands came from years of hard work doing outreach.

Stephen Duncombe and Steve Lambert started the organization around 2009, shortly after Facebook asked organizations to create “pages” to help differentiate from personal “profiles.” In those early years, we used our fan page to share the progress we were making to support artists and activists fighting corruption in West Africa, to help save the lives in the opioid crisis, to get proper healthcare for LGBTQ people in Eastern Europe, and our work to make activism more creative, fun, and effective.

After trainings and other events, our page was especially active as new alumni from countries around the world joined to stay in touch. However, in recent years, the traffic dropped off.
