Eideh shoma mobarak, PFLAGers!

Nowruz, or Persian New Year, has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. Nowruz is a combination of two Persian words that translate to “new day,” and it marks the vernal equinox/arrival of spring.

Our Digital Marketing Manager, Shohreh, grew up celebrating Nowruz, and they remarked that ringing in the new year in March always made more sense to them than doing so in January. Shohreh has fond childhood memories of Nowruz traditions, like receiving fresh dollar bills, having a beautiful haft-sin table set up at home (a decorative spread that includes seven items that start with the letter “s”), and attending parties and picnics with loved ones during the 13 days of new year festivities each year.

Nowruz is an excellent reminder for all of us that there are themes of humanity that have persisted across centuries, including renewal, rebirth, resilience, peace, and hope. 🌷 ☀️

March is Women’s History Month, and it is commonly the case that LGBTQ+ women who changed history are not featured.

We think it’s important to shine a light on the q***r women who came before us and fought for a better world, often during times when sexist, racist, homophobic, and transphobic sentiments were even stronger than they are now.

The photos in this post (from left to right, starting with the top row) are of Sylvia Rivera, Edith Windsor, Dr. Margaret Chung, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, Billie Holiday, Marsha P. Johnson, Christine Jorgensen, Cecilia Gentili, Barbara Gittings, Audre Lorde, Sally Ride, and Brenda Howard.

For any of these women you haven’t heard of, we recommend looking up their stories! Each of these LGBTQ+ women made incredible contributions to society.

Do you have a favorite LGBTQ+ woman from history that we didn’t include? Let us know.

You're invited to celebrate PFLAG NYC's 53rd anniversary! 🥳

On March 11, 1973, the first formal meeting of Parents of Gays—PFLAG’s predecessor—was held in the basement of a church in Greenwich Village. So we're throwing a party on the evening of March 11 in that same church where everything started, now known as the Church of the Village.

This is a free event open to all ages. There will be entertainment from Nancy NoGood, Reina NoBuena, and the COTV Church Choir, plus drinks and light bites.

Please RSVP by March 9 at noon so we know how many people to expect at the event. We encourage you to bring friends, family, and colleagues.

February is Black History Month, and we are featuring some incredible Black and LGBTQ+ trailblazers who are changing the world with their commitment to activism and equity! 🔥

There's no question that Qween Jean, Kei Williams, Imani Rupert-Gordon, Rev. Yunus Coldman, and Kierra Johnson are ones to watch—today and in the future.

Let us know in the comments who else we should familiarize ourselves with and uplift in this space! It's more important than ever to amplify q***r Black voices.

We had another amazing Respect for All Week in NYC public schools earlier this month!

Over five busy and beautiful days, our staff and Safe Schools Program volunteers traveled to seven schools and spoke to 693 students, 73 educators, and five parents/caregivers.

Our staff member Shelby said that the entire week was characterized by joy and shared, "Every school had students with such kind and insightful questions and comments. The conversations were so powerful!"

It's not too late to get trained as a volunteer storyteller with our Safe Schools Program for this school year. We have one more group training coming up at our office on Tuesday, March 3, from 6:30–8:30 p.m, and we also offer one-on-one trainings.

Head to our website to learn more about volunteering with us and sign up to make a difference: https://www.pflagnyc.org/volunteer-with-safe-schools/.

PFLAG NYC mourns the loss of Diane Coughlin, who passed away in late January. Diane was a long-time PFLAG NYC volunteer, the founder of our Safe Schools Program, and a member of our Board of Directors from the 1990s through the late 2010s, her longest tenure spanning from 2005–2018.

Diane first came to PFLAG NYC after finding out one of her adult sons was gay. As she learned what her son Tom had gone through growing up, she was pained to think he had struggled with being gay all alone, and she worried about every kid in school who was going through the same thing.

So Diane made getting PFLAG NYC into schools her mission. She called school after school, walked into school offices, talked to school leaders at events—anything she could to try to get schools to talk about how they were serving gay students.

When a school finally invited Diane to speak, she used that success to open doors at another school. And another. And another. Diane created the PFLAG NYC "Speakers Bureau" to train parents to speak in schools all over the city. That became our Safe Schools Program, which continues to thrive today.

Diane’s unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ young people has changed lives, opened minds, and made New York City schools a safer place for generations of youth. While we grieve the death of a remarkable woman, we celebrate the world she helped build.

Rest in peace, Diane. Your light will continue to guide our work. 💜 🍎

Statement Regarding NYU Langone Health's Discontinuation of Their Transgender Youth Health Program:

PFLAG NYC is devastated by NYU Langone Health's decision to discontinue their Transgender Youth Health Program. It’s a cowardly, shameful, and inhumane decision as their leadership once again gives in to this federal administration's bigotry. Withholding life-saving healthcare from a population made vulnerable not by who they are, but by the way society has chosen to view and treat them, is unconscionable.

There are so many families that are impacted by this abrupt loss of care, this quiet capitulation to political bullies. If your family is one of them, we want you to know that PFLAG NYC will continue to provide support and share resources to help you sift through this pain and confusion.

To trans youth: remember that we have always been here, and we are not going anywhere. They cannot erase us, no matter how hard they try.

Happy Lunar New Year, friends! 🐴

Entering the Year of the Horse, we're channeling the strong-spirited mammal as we aim to meet this moment with passion and energy for our mission.

We also want to shout out our AAPI Rainbow Parents Circle! It’s a monthly social gathering for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) parents, caregivers, and loved ones of LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as AAPI members of the LGBTQ+ community, to come together and learn. The group has a special focus on meeting the cultural and language needs of AAPI families.

AAPI Rainbow Parents Circle meets online on the second Sunday of every month from 3:00–4:30 p.m. ET. If you identify as AAPI, we’d love to have you join us!

Learn more and register to attend an upcoming meeting on our website: https://www.pflagnyc.org/aapi-rainbow-parents-circle/.

We're wishing everyone a courageous year ahead! 🧧

PFLAG NYC is sending you lots of q***r love and laughter heading into Valentine's Day weekend! 💘

You liked last year's silly Valentine's Day cards so much that we decided to make you another set. Giggles are a welcome release in a year that is already challenging for the LGBTQ+ community not even two months in.

Hold your loved ones close, PFLAGers! The most important thing we have is each other (closely followed by trips to the cottage, Alan Cumming's outfits on The Traitors, and rewatching the Benito Bowl!). 💋
