In Sierra Leone, many mothers living in extreme poverty face the daily challenge of caring for their children amid fragile food systems.

For women like Aminata, who has been raising her children alone since the passing of her husband – the pressures of providing nutritious meals and protecting children from illness can be overwhelming.

💜 This is where Concern Worldwide’s Mother-to-Mother support groups play a vital role.

Aminata shared that the group has helped her learn about balanced diets, hygiene practices, and breastfeeding, while also providing a safe space for mothers to spend time together, share their challenges, and support one another.

Across Concern's programs we aim to help mothers tackle a wide range of challenges, including maternal and child nutrition, hygiene, early childhood development, household food security, skills development, and coping with daily stress.

At their heart, these efforts embody universal principles of solidarity and shared experience: mothers learning from mothers, women supporting women, and communities strengthening each other

🌿 How important do you think community support is for mothers?

Clean water access starts long before water flows from a tap.

In Nyal, Panyijiar, Concern teams and local workers are supporting the setup of a surface water treatment (SWAT) system, constructing tapstands and wastewater channels, and conducting ongoing water quality testing to help ensure communities have access to safe water.

Supported by and through the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund, this work helps reduce the risk of waterborne disease in flood-affected areas and strengthens access to clean water for families facing crisis.

Because humanitarian response is not only about delivering aid. It is also about building the systems that help communities stay healthy and safe.

87 million lives is a number difficult to imagine.

This image helps make it real.

In flood-affected areas of South Sudan, daily workers hired by Concern are carrying life-saving nutrition supplies through floodwaters on foot to reach isolated communities — the last mile delivery needed to ensure aid reaches families cut off by severe flooding.

Cartons of RUTF, RUSF, and CSB++ are being delivered to support 3,815 people in Mayendit with support from United Nations OCHA and United Nations OCHA South Sudan.

Even when roads disappear, the need for humanitarian assistance does not.

Victoria and her daughter Yana's lives have become completely unrecognizable — air raid sirens interrupt daily routines and force them to seek shelter at a moment’s notice, while worry for loved ones on the front lines never fades. Since Concern Worldwide's first response in 2022, Concern has stayed alongside families like Victoria and Yana, helping them navigate uncertainty, rebuild routines, and face the future with guidance and care.

Like many Ukrainian children, Yana has grown up without the chance to attend school in person, missing out on the everyday interactions that help children build confidence, friendships, and a sense of normalcy. In the face of this disruption, Concern’s Child Psychosocial Support (PSS) Program offers a safe, structured space where children can play, connect, and begin to process what they’ve experienced. Through guided activities led by trained psychologists, children can express emotions, rebuild social skills, and find moments of stability — helping families cope with the emotional toll of crisis while navigating daily life.

💬 “This program is like fresh water for the people who participate. Nowadays communication is pretty limited between people and sessions like these allow people to share their experiences and get some rest from the hardships of daily life.”

With support like this, families aren’t just surviving crisis — they’re finding the strength, stability, and connection needed to begin healing and move forward.

How can Concern Worldwide best support people when conflict has shattered their sense of safety?

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, decades of instability have left many communities living with the ongoing consequences of conflict and displacement. Women and girls are often among the most affected, facing heightened risks of violence, trauma, and insecurity during and after conflict.

That’s why Concern works alongside communities to provide psychosocial support, medical care, and emergency assistance — recognizing that emotional recovery is just as important as access to food, shelter, and healthcare.

For many women and girls, safety remains fragile long after conflict subsides. Survivors of violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, often continue to live with fear, distress, and lasting impacts on their health, relationships, livelihoods, and sense of stability.

Faradje has lived through this reality. Like many survivors, she carries experiences that are not always visible but deeply felt in everyday life. With support from Concern, she has been able to begin the long process of recovery — not only addressing immediate needs, but also finding space to steady herself and look ahead.

Concern’s teams provide safe, confidential spaces where survivors can talk through their experiences, reduce distress, and rebuild a sense of stability and control. This support recognizes that healing is both physical and emotional.

Step by step, this support helps survivors move beyond survival alone — restoring daily routines, rebuilding confidence, and creating the conditions to re-engage with their communities in ways that feel safe, supported, and self-directed.

👨‍👦‍👦 How can better mental health support make a difference for families during emergencies?

Displaced in Lebanon, Dalia has spent years living with instability and prolonged stress that left her feeling depressed, emotionally overwhelmed, and struggling to cope as a parent. Concern Worldwide supported her through its psychosocial support (PSS) program in 2024, providing structured sessions to help her manage stress, process difficult emotions, and rebuild healthier family relationships.

Through practical coping strategies, she learned how to regulate her emotions and communicate more positively with her children. Over time, this support helped reduce her stress levels, restore daily routines, and improve her confidence as a parent. It also strengthened family relationships and helped bring greater stability and balance back into her home life.

💬 "I am proud of how I’ve improved in dealing with conflicts, and managing my emotions. Paying attention to my mental health has made me a better parent and a better person."
