WhyHunger is a leading advocate for innovative, community-based solutions to hunger and poverty. WhyHunger challenges society to confront these problems by advancing models that create self-reliance, economic justice, and equal access to nutritious and affordable food. WhyHunger Programs:

The Global Movements program works through international and US civil society networks to link WhyHunger’s do

mestic work on hunger and poverty to global movements for food sovereignty and the basic rights to food, land, water, and sustainable livelihoods for all people. The Nourish Network for the Right to Food collects, develops and distributes information and resources to help build the capacity of EFPs to address the immediate needs of struggling families and individuals while promoting self-reliance and access to healthy food. The Nourish program includes the WhyHunger National Hunger Hotline (1-800-5HUNGRY) which refers people in need anywhere in the US to food pantries, soup kitchens, government programs and model grassroots organizations. The Grassroots Action Network provides capacity building services, mentoring, training opportunities, and technical assistance to organizations that are actively forging new ideas to transform communities and end hunger and poverty. Together with a network of over 8,000 grassroots organizations, we share their innovations, mobilize resources, and connect them to each other in order to support their work to build healthier, sustainable communities that develop local food systems and strengthen local economies. Artists Against Hunger & Poverty enlists performing artists to raise funds and awareness for the most innovative and effective community-based organizations fighting hunger and poverty on the frontlines in cities, towns and villages all across the world. whyHunger offers artists, the artists community, and the music industry an opportunity to take a stand by using their voices and resources effectively – doing what they already do so well. Through music we can all make a difference in the world.

Across the food system, far too many jobs are defined by low wages, unsafe working conditions and inadequate benefits. This means that the people who grow, pick, process, and serve our food cannot afford to nourish themselves and their families.

We stand in solidarity with labor movements and workers around the world who are organizing and advocating for fair treatment, dignity, and economic justice.

Everyone deserves to afford nutritious food and be treated with respect and fairness in the workplace.

Last week, WhyHunger staff presented at the Closing the Hunger Gap convening, where attendees built skills, engaged in deep learning and developed a shared analysis to create a more just food system.

Surrounded by advocates and organizers, we dove into the "Be, Build, Block” framework, focusing on transformative strategies that move beyond charity models and towards community-driven solutions.

Labor organizer and attorney MĂłnica RamĂrez, founder of Justice for Migrant Women, shares about her work elevating farmworker voices and addressing violence against women in the food system.

"They want to be seen and they want to be valued. A lot of them live in invisibility... doing work that literally sustains us. Whether they’re working in a grocery store, at a restaurant, a food truck, or far off in the fields, it’s like society has made them invisible."

A new study shows SNAP enrollment dropped by 2.5 million people in just six months after the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—but it’s not because fewer people need help. The bill included historic cuts to SNAP through changes to work requirements and a shift in costs to states. Hunger doesn’t disappear when support is taken away—it grows.

A recent analysis shows 2.5 million fewer people are using federal food assistance, but experts say the need for aid is likely still there.

For Earth Day, we’re sharing a poem honoring our planet and lifting up agroecology as a powerful way of caring for land and people.

Agroecology isn’t just about farming; it’s a movement rooted in community, equality, and deep respect for the land. By blending Indigenous wisdom with modern science, farmers around the world create sustainable solutions that nourish both people and the planet.
