How do we preserve history while keeping it relevant today? Museum Hue spoke with Hannah Grantham, Director of the Mitchell Center for African American Heritage at the Delaware Historical Society, to talk about the power of community-driven preservation. Through their Restore and Remember program, volunteers amplify local organizations preserving artifacts that tell the story of African American history and culture.

For Hannah, history isn’t something that stays behind glass. It’s a conversation that helps us better understand where we’ve been and where we’re going.

🎷 Listen in to hear how which song she chose by jazz legend and Delawarean, Clifford Brown, to encapsulate Wilmington's black communities.

Stop #2 on Museum Hue’s docuseries shoot was Baltimore, Maryland. We were blown away by the variety, richness and longevity of the museums we visited in Charm City!

Over the course of 3 days, we visited four Hue museums and cultural centers in Baltimore, plus one in Washington, D.C. These incredible organizations ran the gamut, from the historic home of an African American civil rights leader to a museum and cultural center serving Baltimore’s indigenous community.

Thank you to each institution for welcoming us to your city and sharing your impactful work.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and a reminder that Black history must be protected, preserved, and carried forward.

Across the country, Black museums serve as guardians of our stories, safeguarding the people, places, movements, and cultural traditions that shape Black life in America. Through Museum Hue’s HueArts and Cultures research, we continue to document and amplify the impact of these vital institutions, which not only preserve history but also strengthen communities, inspire future generations, and ensure our narratives remain visible and valued.

This Juneteenth, we honor the Black museums, cultural centers, and Hue Custodians whose work helps us understand where we’ve been, celebrate how far we’ve come, and imagine what’s possible ahead.

Museum Hue worked with Slover Linett at NORC at the University of Chicago to create a survey as part of our HueArts & Cultures: Northeast research. The survey was sent to Hue Institutions and covered their origins and structures, operational priorities, and future aspirations.

45 organizations across the Northeast completed the survey, providing valuable insight into museums and cultural centers of color in the region. Here are key data points that emerged:

-48% of the organizations surveyed have operating budgets under $500,000
-22% have operating budgets over $2.5 million
-Over 60% of these organizations were founded 20+ years ago
-Nearly half of the organizations have founders who identify as Black, African, African-American, or Afro-Caribbean

Alaa Zaghloul spoke with Museum Hue for her very first interview on behalf of Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture. This Philadelphia-based non-profit was founded in 2002. Through Arab arts, language, and culture, Al-Bustan serves as a hub for the Arab American community in the city, and amplifies Arab artists, like Alia Bensliman, whose work was on display during our visit.

Watch to hear Alaa share her dream collaboration for the institution and how art is giving her hope during this difficult period.

The HueArts docuseries was born out of our HueArts & Cultures report. Many Hue Museums and Cultural Centers cite a lack of recent, professional photos and videos of their collections and programming as a major challenge. Without these assets, marketing, communications, and grant applications become even more difficult.

To address this gap and bring more attention to the amazing work of these institutions, Museum Hue launched our HueArts docuseries. In addition to interviews with museum leaders, we're documenting their spaces through photographs. Each organization will receive the photographs and footage we capture and are free to use them as they see fit.

This season, we're expanding our reach and visiting organizations throughout the Northeast. And what better place to start than New York City, where the HueArts research project began. We kicked off filming at two institutions that have been longtime champions of Museum Hue: the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) and Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI).

These images by Matt Stanley capture the warmth, joy, and powerful conversations Stephanie had with Amy Andrieux of MoCADA and Melody Capote and Lumumba Bandele of CCCADI.

During Museum Hue's recent visit to the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute in Harlem, we had the opportunity to speak with Melody Capote, the center's Executive Director. She gave us insight into CCCADI's goal of connecting all people of African descent and what she's learned from diving into their archives in celebration of their 50th anniversary.

Keep watching to find out which track she chose as the organization's theme song! And stay tuned for new conversations with museum leaders each Huesday!
