Core Values

Academic Excellence We believe that each student has the potential to excel in school and to this end, we focus on teaching each student individually. We feel that in order for a student to excel, he/she has to be taught in the way he/she learns. In our academic process we realize that some students learn best by reading, some learn best by hearing the information he/she has to learn, some learn best by seeing and some learn best by touching. In identifying the way in which a student learns best, we are able to focus on teaching that student in the way that best suits his/her learning style and in so doing, each student has the opportunity to excel academically. Most importantly, we believe that academic excellence is the key to opening the doors of opportunity and assuring that our young leaders excel in life. Accountability We view the Young Leaders’ Academy as a family—one in which each member is held responsible for his/her own action and is also responsible for each other. We realize that there are times when our young leaders may make mistakes and assure them that mistakes are a part of living, however, it is necessary for them to admit them and do all they could to correct them. Community We believe that we are an integral part of our community and as such it is our responsibility to reach out to the community and help its residents. Moreover, we feel that we have a role in the community and that role is to take an active part in improving our schools, neighborhoods, city and our country. Competition We believe that it is important for us to prepare our young leaders in order for them to compete in the free market economy, compete to have a better life and to compete in order to increase their chances of succeeding in school and in life. To this end, we equip each young leader with the necessary technology, business and life skills. Etiquette We believe that each young leader should possess the necessary respect and manners in order to be viewed positively by society. We impart the necessary social graces in each of our young leader in order for them to model respect to all who may be observing them. We feel that the way in which we relate to each other in public, private and by electronic media impacts the opportunities we may have in life. As such, we feel that in order to open the doors of opportunity our young leaders should possess the necessary social graces. Exposure We believe that it is important to expose our young leaders to different elements of culture. In so doing we will expose them to museums, cultural events, institutions of learning such as the Liberty Science Center, Zoos, Broadway plays etc. This will develop well-rounded leaders who are able to compete with their wealthier counterparts. Family We believe that family is a fundamental building block of society and that parent(s) must be involved in this process in order for their children to succeed. In order for our Young Leaders to succeed, we require parent(s) to attend a monthly meeting to discuss the progress made by our Young Leaders. Hard Work We believe that hard work assures success. As such, we require our Young Leaders to work hard and play hard. Communication Skills We believe that effective leaders are first and foremost effective communicators. To this end, we teach our young leaders how to communicate effectively both in writing and in speech. Service We believe that effective leaders serve others before self. Service increases a sense of community ownership and responsibility. In emphasizing service we empower our young leaders and give them the skills necessary to lead productive lives. Teamwork We believe that the best learning experience is one that uses a cooperative learning philosophy. In so doing, our Young Leaders are able to benefit from each other’s strengths and are able to assist in strengthen the academy as a whole.
