Hey, friends. We're still pulling together a lineup for you guys, but we have an announcement about the benefit recipient of our upcoming show at Lantern Hall on September 29th.
This organization name we use for booking is pretty goofy and came about as somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it very much sprang from the idea that racism, bigotry, and hatred in any of its forms have no place in our country, our city, or at our shows. By putting on regular benefits, we hoped that maybe we could do our small part (and do something we love) to help those affected by prejudice and systemic inequality, particularly on a local level, and bring together people who felt the same way.
This has been a hard (read: harrowing) week for anyone with a soul and a spine, and it's been somewhat overwhelming to figure out what kind of charity would be the best to choose in response. After much consideration, we're hoping that you and others will support proceeds going to the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are "dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society [u]sing litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy." They've stepped up into the national spotlight in a big way in the wake of the terrorism in Charlottesville and the resurgence of the white supremacist/white nationalist movement in the United States that preceded it. It's hard to imagine that they don't have more difficult work ahead of them.
It's a cause we feel is urgently necessary to support at this particular moment in history, given our mission statement, and we hope you'll agree and understand that we will renew our commitment to supporting New York City-based charities in the future.
We hope to see you on the 29th. Thanks for helping us do what we do. Be good to each other.
