Last night, the unelected Rent Guidelines Board voted to approve yet another outrageous rent increase for rent stabilized tenants. We want to make sure you are paying the correct rent, and that if your landlord is overcharging you, they don't get another cent! Knowing your rent history is the first step in identifying rent overcharge. Find out if you're rent stabilized and order your rent history today at app.justfix.org/rh

In light of the Rent Guidelines Board vote this evening on whether to increase rent, we want to shed light on some common talking points and give the facts. Corporate ownership, especially among rent stab. buildings, have gone UP in the last decade
https://medium.com/justfixorg/corporatization-of-nyc-real-estate-83e2bf191b73

According to our analysis of building portfolios through HPD:
- landlords who control less than 50 rental units own only 8% of all rent stabilized housing in NYC
- and landlords with less than 10 units own only 1% of rent stabilized units.

Landlords in fact do NOT need a rent increase. We support all tenants who have testified against the proposed rent hikes. Inflation has made life so much harder for so many New Yorkers, and the last thing we need is to be paying more rent!

The Letter of Complaint is a great tool to help tenants who need support escalating repair issues to their landlords. For some organizers like Stan, the Letter of Complaint supported organizing efforts to put pressure on the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). Tenants in NYCHA developments often experience rampant negligence and disrepair in their buildings. The Letter of Complaint was a tool to unite tenants and escalate their concerns. Have you heard the buzz around JustFix? JustFix has awesome tools to help you take control of your home! Our users have accessed our suite of tools to build tenants' unions, get repairs done, and uncover truths about their landlords. Here's what Patricia of Brooklyn Community Organize said about Who Owns What:

"Who Owns What is kind of like a super power or a super tool to ensure that you as the organizer are doing your due diligence. And that tenants have the resources and accessibility to access all of these links as well. Because the more you know, the more power you have."

Our hearts go out to Jordan Neely, an unhoused Black man asking for change on the subway who was brutally murdered by a racist, ex-marine vigilante. Jordan continues to be dehumanized, even in death, with the media perpetuating anti-Black rhetoric to seemingly justify his ex*****on.

People experiencing homelessness, like Jordan, are often seen as threats because of the systemic criminalization and routine demonization of the unhoused. JustFix firmly believes that housing is a human right and that no person should go hungry or unsheltered, especially in one of the wealthiest cities in the world.

Policies like Mayor Adam’s street sweeps of homeless encampments and Governor Hochul’s lack of robust housing policies that protect the most disenfranchised and vulnerable in New York’s state budget have compounded the devastating impact of a sustained, entrenched housing crisis. Instead of redressing and eradicating the root cause of institutional violence and systemic oppression, our leaders simply want to place poverty out of view.

Displacement, evictions, gentrification, and the criminalization of the unhoused are intrinsically linked to Jordan’s public lynching, and we must mobilize to combat further loss.
