The William Matheus Sullivan Musical Foundation supports young opera singers in the early stages of their careers with awards and grants for new roles.

The Sullivan Foundation supports opera singers beginning their solo professional careers. We provide audition awards and grants for artists to learn new roles. There are no audition or application fees, and travel assistance is provided.

Established through the estate of William Matheus Sullivan, the Foudation has supported more than 1,100 singers since 1957. The International Opera Awards recognized the Sullivan Foundation with the Philanthropy Award in 2023.

2025 Sullivan Winner Anna Thompson sang Micäela in La Tragédie de Carmen with the Merola Opera Program this fall. In the fall she is joining the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Program and will make her The Metropolitan Opera debut as the High Priestess in Aida. We are delighted to be part of her career journey!

This fall 2025 Career Development Grant winner Yazid Gray will be performing Moralès in Carmen at North Carolina Opera and The Businesman in The Little Prince at Resonance Works A champion of new music, Yazid was recently featured in the world premiere of Time to Act by Laura Kaminsky and Crystal Manich at Pittsburgh Opera.

The 2026 Sullivan Foundation application deadline is approaching! Apply online at https://www.sullivanfoundation.org/ by August 3rd to be considered for an in-person audition in New York on October 15 or 16.

The Foundation seeks promising opera singers starting their solo professional careers. Sullivan Award winners receive prizes of $10,000 and are eligible for grants to learn new roles. There are no application or audition fees and travel assistance is available. More than 1,100 singers have earned Sullivan support since 1957 through the foundation established by the estate of our namesake William Matheus Sullivan.

In 2025 the Foundation gave $100,000 in audition awards to 13 singers:

Sullivan Award winner Sunwoo Park is singing Rosina in Opera Santa Barbara's upcoming production of The Barber of Seville. Sunwoo's award is designated in memory of Sullivan trustee Gail Robinson, a distinguished teacher and singer whose roles included Rosina.

Career Development Winner Meg Brilleslyper is starting her second season with the Bayerische Staatsoper, where she has a full schedule, including the premiere production of Brett Dean's Of One Blood. We are very glad to be part of her journey from studying at academic institutions to working as a professional singer.

Sullivan Award winner Ricardo José Rivera just sang the title role in Teatro Nuovo's production of Don Giovanni. His performance was praised as "an unalloyed success" by Musical America.

We recently awarded Lauren Margison preparation grant for her fall engagement to sing the Brahms Requiem with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec.

Earlier this year she made her US debut earlier this year in Verdi's Requiem with Opera Memphis and Memphis Symphony Orchestra, another engagement we were very pleased to support!

Lauren was a 2024 Sullivan Award winner. The Foundation has supported more than 1,100 early career opera singers since 1957.
